Romans 1:17 says that God’s righteousness is revealed through faith, moving from faith to faith, and that the righteous person lives by trusting God. Paul wrote this near the start of his letter to the Christians in Rome, a church he had not yet visited. He quotes an older Hebrew scripture, the prophet Habakkuk, to show that this way of life is nothing new.

For in it is revealed God’s righteousness from faith to faith. As it is written, “But the righteous shall live by faith.”

What Romans 1:17 Means

The phrase “God’s righteousness” refers to God’s own right and faithful way of setting things right. Paul says this righteousness is “revealed” in the good news about Jesus. It is not something people invent or earn. It is something God shows, and the gospel is the place where that showing happens.

“From faith to faith” is a phrase Bible readers have debated for centuries. Most readers take it to mean that the path of righteousness begins and continues through faith, from first trust to lasting trust. Paul does not say how much faith a person needs or how strong it must be. He simply describes faith as the way this righteousness is received and lived out.

The verse closes with a short quotation: “the righteous shall live by faith.” Paul is saying that life with God, both now and forever, is sustained by trust rather than by proving yourself. The verse does not promise an easy life or freedom from trouble. It makes a claim about where life with God comes from.

The Context of Romans 1:17

Paul wrote Romans in the middle of the first century, and it is traditionally attributed to him. His audience was a mixed group of Jewish and non-Jewish believers in Rome. Tension between these two groups shaped much of what he wrote, so he takes care to say the gospel is for both.

Just before verse 17, Paul says he is not ashamed of the good news, because it is God’s power for salvation for everyone who believes, “for the Jew first, and also for the Greek.” Just after, he turns to the wrath of God against human sin. That contrast matters. Verse 17 sits between the power of the gospel and the seriousness of human rebellion, so the righteousness it describes is a gift that answers a real problem.

Key Phrases in Romans 1:17

Habakkuk 2:4

Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright in him, but the righteous will live by his faith.

This is the Old Testament line Paul quotes in Romans 1:17. Reading it in its original setting shows that living by faith was already central to God’s dealings with his people long before the New Testament was written.

Galatians 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me.

Paul returns to the theme of living by faith here, describing a life that is lived in trust in the Son of God. It helps you see faith as a daily relationship rather than a one-time decision.

A Short Prayer From Romans 1:17

Lord, I confess that I often try to earn your approval by how well I perform. Thank you that your righteousness is a gift revealed in Jesus, and that I can receive it by trusting you. Help me to live by faith today, especially in the moments when I feel anxious or unsure of my standing with you. Steady my heart in your faithfulness, and let my trust grow from one day to the next. Amen.
