Romans 6:9 teaches that Jesus, once raised from the dead, will never die again, and that death no longer has any power over him. Because he lives on, believers can trust that the defeat of death is complete and permanent. The apostle Paul wrote this to the church in Rome, reminding Christians there that their new life rests on the finished work of Christ.
Knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no more has dominion over him!

What Romans 6:9 Means
The verse begins by stating a settled fact: Christ was raised from the dead. Paul is not describing a temporary revival, as with Lazarus, who would eventually die again. He is pointing to a resurrection after which Jesus is alive in a way that death cannot touch. The phrase “dies no more” means that his death is over once and for all.
The second sentence uses the image of a ruler. Death “has dominion” over people in the sense that it governs and claims them. Paul says that this rule has no hold on Christ anymore. Notice what the verse does not promise. It does not describe the believer’s own bodily resurrection in detail, and it does not claim that Christians will never suffer or grieve. It establishes the certainty of Christ’s victory, which becomes the foundation for everything Paul says in the verses that follow.
The Context of Romans 6:9
Romans was written by the apostle Paul, probably from Corinth around the middle of the first century, to a congregation he had not yet visited. Its readers were a mix of Jewish and Gentile believers living in the capital of the empire. In chapters 5 and 6 Paul has been explaining how the grace of God outweighs sin, and a natural objection arises: if grace is so abundant, should people keep sinning? Paul answers with a firm no, grounding the Christian’s new life in union with Christ.
Read against verses 6 through 8, Romans 6:9 becomes the reason for that answer. Paul has just said that the old self was crucified with Christ and that believers died with him. Since Christ rose and cannot die again, the believer shares in a life that is no longer ruled by sin or death. That is why verse 9 sits in the middle of the argument, linking the cross and the empty tomb to the way Christians now live.
Key Phrases in Romans 6:9
1 Corinthians 15:20
But now Christ has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruits of those who are asleep.
(WEB)
Paul calls Christ the firstfruits of those who have died, showing that his resurrection is the beginning of a larger harvest. This helps explain why his rising matters for every believer.
Revelation 1:18
And the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades.
(WEB)
The risen Christ declares that he holds the keys of death and Hades. The verse is a vivid picture of the same truth Paul states in Romans, that death no longer has the final authority.
A Short Prayer From Romans 6:9
Lord Jesus, you were raised from the dead and you will not die again. I am grateful that death has lost its hold on you, and I ask you to help me live today in the freedom that flows from that victory. When fear rises or old patterns pull at me, remind me that I belong to you and that your life is stronger than anything that tries to hold me. Let my choices this day reflect the one who lives. Amen.
