This page gathers Scripture about children for parents, grandparents, teachers, foster carers and anyone praying over a young life. Each group of verses speaks to a different part of raising children: the worry of the early morning, the long ordinary days of teaching, the fear that you are getting it wrong, and the hope that God is at work in them. The verses share one conviction: children are a gift, they belong to God, and he cares for them even more closely than you can.

Verses for Children as a Gift from God

When a child is born, adopted or placed in your care, it can feel as though the responsibility is too large for one person. These passages remind you that children come from the Lord and are to be received with gratitude. Read them when you are tired and need to remember where the blessing came from.

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

The psalmist calls children a heritage from the Lord, something entrusted rather than owned. Try saying this sentence over your child at bedtime, then pause and thank God for one specific thing about them that day.

Psalm 127:4-5

4 As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of youth. 5 Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They won’t be disappointed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

(WEB)

These verses picture children as arrows in a warrior’s hand, a comparison that speaks of purpose and of a future beyond the home. When you feel anxious about who your child will become, bring that future to God and ask him to aim it well.

Matthew 19:14

But Jesus said, “Allow the little children, and don’t forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.”

(WEB)

Jesus insists that children are not kept away from him. If your child is struggling to know God, take them to him in prayer each day, speaking their name aloud and inviting Jesus into their particular fears and joys.

Verses for Parents Facing Daily Pressure

Parenting is made of small repeated tasks: meals, homework, arguments over shoes, sleepless nights. The verses in this section speak to the weariness of doing good work that never seems finished. They are meant for the kitchen sink and the school run as much as for quiet devotion.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

This proverb is a call to patient, consistent training rather than a promise that every child will follow it perfectly. Choose one habit this week that you want to shape, such as a family prayer before dinner, and repeat it faithfully.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul warns fathers, and by extension all parents, not to provoke their children to anger but to raise them with the Lord’s instruction. Before you correct a child, pause long enough to ask yourself whether your words will build them up or wear them down.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

This image of a shepherd carrying lambs close to his heart shows God’s gentleness toward the young and weak. On days when you feel you are carrying more than you can manage, remember that the Lord is the one who carries both you and your children.

Colossians 3:21

Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged.

(WEB)

Paul cautions parents against discouraging their children so that they lose heart. Look for one honest word of encouragement you can give today, something specific about effort rather than only about results.

Verses on Trusting God With Your Child’s Future

Some of the hardest prayers are the ones made for children who are far away, struggling, or making choices you cannot control. These passages do not remove the fear, but they point it toward a God who holds every life and keeps faithful watch over those who belong to him.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Trusting the Lord with all your heart means handing over the outcomes you cannot shape. When you catch yourself planning every detail of your child’s path, write these verses on a card and place it somewhere you will see it.

Isaiah 54:13

All your children will be taught by the LORD; and your children’s peace will be great.

(WEB)

Isaiah promises that the children of God’s people will be taught by the Lord and enjoy great peace. Pray this over your child’s education, asking that they learn both knowledge and wisdom, and that they may be at peace in their learning.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

The Lord keeps your going out and your coming in, from now on and forevermore. For a child who is away at school, travelling or starting work, pray these words as a blessing each time they leave and return.

3 John 1:4

I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth.

(WEB)

John writes that he has no greater joy than to hear his children walk in the truth. Whatever your children’s current path, name one way you hope they will walk in faithfulness, and thank God for any sign of it already.

Verses on Jesus and Little Children

The Gospels show Jesus making time for children, welcoming them and holding them up as examples of faith. These verses are useful for children’s ministry, for reading with a young person, or for remembering that Jesus delights in the smallest believers.

Mark 10:14

But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to me! Don’t forbid them, for God’s Kingdom belongs to such as these.

(WEB)

Jesus is indignant when his disciples try to turn the children away. If you lead a children’s group or care for other people’s children, let this verse shape your welcome, making sure every young person feels wanted.

Mark 9:37

“Whoever receives one such little child in my name, receives me, and whoever receives me, doesn’t receive me, but him who sent me.”

(WEB)

Jesus says that whoever welcomes a child in his name welcomes him. Notice one small child this week, such as a neighbour’s son or a classmate, and offer a simple kindness in Jesus’ name.

Luke 18:16

Jesus summoned them, saying, “Allow the little children to come to me, and don’t hinder them, for God’s Kingdom belongs to such as these.

(WEB)

Jesus calls the children to himself and says that the kingdom belongs to such as these. Read this verse with a child and ask them what they think it means to come to Jesus the way a child does.

How to Use These Verses

Write a few of these verses on cards and place them where your family already gathers, such as the fridge, the kitchen table or the back of a bedroom door. Choose one verse each week to read aloud at breakfast or bedtime, and let children repeat it back in their own words. Younger children respond well to short verses and actions, while older children may enjoy discussing what a verse means for their friendships and school life.

Pray the verses as well as reading them. Turn a verse about children into a prayer by putting your child’s name into it, asking God to do what the passage describes. Keep a simple notebook of answered prayers, however small, so that you can see over time how the Lord is faithful to the children entrusted to you.

A Short Prayer for Children

Lord, thank you for the children you have placed in my life, whether they are my own or ones I care for in your name. I confess that I often feel unready for the task, and I ask you to fill the gaps with your patience and wisdom. Help me to welcome them as Jesus did, to correct them with gentleness, and to model the faith I hope they will grow into. Hold each child closer than I ever could, and keep them safe in your care today and every day. Amen.
