If you are looking for scriptures about letting go of the past, this list gathers verses that speak to regret, old failures, and wounds that keep returning to your mind. It is written for anyone who wants God’s word to help them release what is behind and walk toward what he has prepared. These passages share a common thread: they point to God’s mercy and his power to make something new, rather than asking you to fix yourself first.

Verses for Mornings When Regret Returns

Some days the past arrives before breakfast, carried in by a memory or an old mistake that will not stay quiet. The verses in this group speak to that moment of waking up with the weight already on your chest, reminding you where your attention can rest instead.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul admits he has not arrived, yet he refuses to let what lies behind define his next step. Try naming one thing you are leaving behind this morning, then pick one small task that moves you toward the day ahead.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These lines were written from a ruined city, yet they insist that God’s mercies are renewed each morning. Before you check your phone, say the words slowly and let the new morning be a fresh gift rather than a repeat of yesterday.

Isaiah 43:18-19

18 “Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

God tells his people not to dwell on former things, and he announces something new already springing up. Look for one small sign of newness today, such as a conversation, a kindness, or a quiet hour, and thank God for it.

Verses for Forgiving Yourself and Others

Letting go often means facing the people and choices that hurt us, including ourselves. These verses address the hard work of releasing debts, grudges, and the harsh voice that replays old failures.

Psalm 103:11-12

11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his loving kindness toward those who fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

The psalmist measures God’s mercy against the vastness of the heavens and the distance of the east from the west. When self-criticism grows loud, write down one specific failure and then write beside it the mercy the psalm describes.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul ties forgiveness directly to the forgiveness we have received. Think of one person who has wronged you and decide, in a simple prayer, to release the debt you have been holding against them.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

This verse offers a plain pattern: confess honestly, and receive cleansing from God. Set aside a few minutes this week to name a past failure aloud before God, then stop repeating the confession in your mind.

Verses for When Old Wounds Still Hurt

Some pain does not disappear on schedule, and letting go may feel slow. The passages in this section speak to God’s nearness in grief and his tenderness toward those who are still healing.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The Lord is described as close to the brokenhearted, not distant from them. When an old wound flares up, tell God plainly where it hurts, without needing the feeling to be tidy first.

Isaiah 61:1-3

1 The Lord the LORD’s Spirit is on me; because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to those who are bound; 2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion, to give to them a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they may be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified.

(WEB)

This passage describes God binding up the brokenhearted and giving beauty for ashes. Consider one area where you still sit in ashes, and ask God to show you one small piece of beauty growing there.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Paul says that anyone in Christ is a new creation, and the old has passed away. Remind yourself of this when shame tries to name you by your worst season, and speak your new identity out loud once today.

Verses for Trusting God With What Comes Next

Releasing the past is not only about looking back less. It is also about placing your future in God’s hands, trusting that he holds the path you cannot yet see.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

These verses ask you to trust God with your whole heart and not to lean only on your own understanding. When you are tempted to replay what you could have done differently, pause and ask God to direct the next decision.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God works all things together for good for those who love him. This does not deny the pain of the past, but it invites you to believe God can weave even hard seasons into a larger story.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 “Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary and burdened to come to him and find rest. Take one burden you have been carrying from the past and, in prayer, set it down at his feet for the rest of the day.

Psalm 27:13-14

13 I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

The psalmist confesses that he would have fainted without confidence in God’s goodness, and then urges waiting on the Lord. Choose one hope for the coming months and hold it with open hands.

Revelation 21:5

He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

(WEB)

The one seated on the throne declares that he is making all things new. Let this promise close your day by thinking of one area where you long for renewal and entrusting it to the one who makes all things new.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that speak most to you on an index card or in the notes app on your phone, and keep them where you will see them when old memories surface. Reading one verse at the start of the day, or when regret begins to circle, works better than trying to memorize a long list all at once.

Pray the verses back to God in your own words instead of only reading them silently. Say, for example, “Lord, you say your mercies are new every morning, so I receive today’s mercy,” and let the verse shape the wording of your prayer.

A Short Prayer for Letting Go of the Past

Father, you know every memory I carry, including the ones I wish had never happened. I confess the choices I regret, and I receive the forgiveness you offer through Jesus. Help me stop rehearsing what you have already covered with your mercy. Where I have held grudges, loosen my grip and make me willing to release the debt. Make something new in me today, and teach me to walk toward the future you have prepared. Amen.
