This page gives you short Bible verses for a celebration of life, the gathering where family and friends remember someone who has died and give thanks for the life they lived. It is for anyone choosing a reading for a service, writing a card, or looking for a few lines to carry through the day. Each verse here is brief enough to read aloud in one breath, and each speaks to grief held alongside gratitude and hope in God.

Verses of Hope in the Presence of God

Celebrations of life often ask a hard question: where is the person now? These verses point to God as the one who holds both the living and the departed. Read them slowly, and let each phrase settle before moving to the next.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

In a room full of talking and tears, this verse invites you to stop. Pick one moment during the day, perhaps before you leave the house, and simply sit quietly for a minute while you repeat the first phrase to yourself.

Psalm 23:1

The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing.

(WEB)

This opening line of the best-known psalm names a relationship rather than a rule. Speak it over the person being remembered, and then over yourself, noticing how the word “my” changes the sentence.

John 14:1

“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to disciples who did not understand what was coming. Let them reach you the same way, as an instruction given in the middle of fear. When your heart starts racing during the service, breathe out and say the verse once.

Revelation 21:4

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”

(WEB)

This verse describes a future without death, mourning or pain. Write it on the back of the service program so that when the stories are told, you have a place to look that points past the grief to what God promises.

Verses of Gratitude for a Life Well Lived

A celebration is also a thanksgiving. The verses in this group turn attention from loss to the gifts of the person’s life, the love given and received, and the faithfulness of God across the years.

1 Thessalonians 5:18

In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

(WEB)

Gratitude is not the same as feeling fine. Paul does not say to be thankful for every circumstance, but to give thanks in every circumstance. At the reception, you might name one specific thing you are grateful for about the person, out loud or on paper.

Lamentations 3:23

They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

The writer finds fresh mercy each morning even in ruin. Remember that God’s faithfulness shown to your loved one continues in the days after the service. Let the morning light remind you of this when the house feels too quiet.

Psalm 118:1

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his loving kindness endures forever.

(WEB)

This short call to give thanks because God is good and his love endures fits naturally at the start or close of a gathering. Choose a family member to read it aloud, and let the room respond together.

Ecclesiastes 3:4

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance…

(WEB)

The Teacher lists seasons of weeping and dancing, mourning and dancing, side by side. A celebration of life is itself a season where both are allowed. Give yourself permission to laugh at a shared memory and to cry at the next one.

Verses of Comfort for Those Left Behind

Those who remain often carry the heaviest weight in the days after a death. These brief verses speak directly to loneliness, fatigue and the need for someone close.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

God is near to the brokenhearted, and this verse names that nearness without asking you to pretend you are whole. If you are the one who is hurting most, speak it to yourself in the car before you walk into the room.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him and find rest. Many people at a memorial are exhausted from planning and hosting. Keep this verse in your pocket, and when you need to step away for a few minutes, treat that pause as an answer to his invitation.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

The psalmist admits fear and then names what to do with it: trust. You may feel afraid of the empty chair at the table or of the first holiday without them. Write this verse on an index card and place it where you will see it each morning this week.

Romans 8:38

For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers…

(WEB)

Paul lists death, life, and every other force and affirms that none can separate believers from God’s love. After the service, when the flowers have wilted and the guests have gone home, return to this verse and let it remind you that the bond with God holds steady.

Verses of Peace and Trust in God

The final group points to a peace that does not depend on circumstances resolving. These verses encourage you to hand over what you cannot control and rest in the character of the God who is with you.

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

This verse describes a peace that goes beyond understanding, which often arrives in moments you did not expect. When you feel overwhelmed by arrangements and phone calls, pause and ask God to guard your heart and mind, then return to the task at hand.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Steadfast trust is the condition for perfect peace in this verse. Notice the word “mind” and consider where your thoughts go when they wander to the hospital room or the last conversation. Bring them back to trust, as often as you need to.

Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding.

(WEB)

Trusting God with all your heart means not relying only on your own understanding, which is especially hard when you are asked to make decisions while grieving. Choose one decision this week and pray this verse over it before you act.

1 John 4:19

We love him, because he first loved us.

(WEB)

John reminds us that love begins with God, who loved us first. Think of the person being remembered, whose love for you was itself a reflection of God’s love. Thank God for that gift, and let it guide how you love the people still with you.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses from this list rather than trying to read all twenty. For the service, a single verse read by a family member or printed on the program is enough. For the days after, keep a short card in your wallet or on your bedside table and read the same verse each morning until it becomes familiar.

You can also pray these verses in your own words. Begin with the verse, pause to consider what it says about God, and then speak to him about the person you miss and the needs you have today. Writing a verse by hand in a journal often helps it stay with you when your mind is tired.

A Short Prayer for a Celebration of Life

Lord, you knew the person we gather to remember before they were born, and you have walked with them through every season of their life. Today we give thanks for the love they shared, the laughter they brought into our days, and the ways they reflected your kindness to us. We also bring our sorrow to you, because we miss them and the world feels different without them. Be near to each of us who grieves today. Give us peace where we are anxious, rest where we are weary, and hope that looks past this goodbye to the life you promise. Amen.
