This is a short morning prayer for a job interview, written for the hours before you leave home and the minutes before you sit down across from the people who will decide. Read it aloud as it is written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where you need them. It can be prayed over coffee, in the car, or in the bathroom mirror while you fix your collar.
Short Morning Prayer for a Job Interview
Lord, I start this day knowing that I have a job interview, and my stomach is already tight about it. I thank you that you are awake before I am, and that nothing about this morning has caught you by surprise. You know the résumé I wrote, the years I worked to get here, and the answers I rehearsed last night that I may forget the moment someone asks me a question. Steady my thoughts. Help me remember what I actually know.
Give me clear words when I speak and patience when I listen. Let me hear each question fully before I answer it, and let me be honest about what I know and what I still need to learn. Keep me from trying to impress with things that are not true, and keep me from shrinking back from the things that are. Let the people who meet me see someone who is prepared, courteous, and at peace. If this role is the right one, open the door. If it is not, show me that too, and give me grace to accept it. I trust you with the outcome, and I trust you with me in the room. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am nervous and I need you now. Quiet my mind so I can think clearly. Help me speak plainly, listen carefully, and be myself in front of these people. Whatever happens in the next hour, I want to walk out having honored you in how I carried myself. Thank you that I do not face this alone. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Paul names anxiety directly and then gives a way out of it: bring the specific request to God with thanksgiving. Before your interview, name the exact things you fear, such as freezing up or forgetting your best example, and hand each one over in prayer.
Proverbs 3:5-6
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.
(WEB)
This passage asks you to trust God with your whole mind, not only the parts you feel certain about. Pray it as you prepare your answers, asking God to guide not just what you say but the way the conversation unfolds.
James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.
(WEB)
James promises wisdom to anyone who asks, given generously and without scolding. Ask for wisdom in the moments when a question catches you off guard and you need to choose the right thing to say.
Colossians 3:23
And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…
(WEB)
Work done for the Lord is a different kind of work, and it changes how you show up. Pray this verse to remind yourself that your effort in the interview is an offering, whatever the hiring decision turns out to be.
Psalm 121:1-2
1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
(WEB)
The psalmist lifts his eyes toward the hills and remembers where his help comes from. Use this verse when your nerves climb, and look up in your mind to the one who made you and who sees where you are going today.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray it at a time when you can be quiet, ideally before you check messages or leave the house. If you have a few minutes in the car before you go in, pray it there with your hands on the steering wheel or resting in your lap. Some people find it helps to write the first line on a card and hold it in a pocket during the interview, though you do not need to read it in the room.
If someone in your life prays, ask them to pray with you or for you at the same hour. A friend, spouse, parent, or church member can carry your interview in their own morning prayers, and a short text saying “praying for you at 9” can be a comfort on the way in.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord go with you into that room and steady your voice. May he give you clarity when the questions come and kindness toward the people asking them. Whatever comes after today, may you walk out knowing you were faithful and that God was with you the whole time.
