This short morning prayer asks God for grace and mercy before the day gets loud. It is meant for the first few minutes after you wake, or the quiet moment before you open your phone or head out the door. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Morning Prayer for Grace and Mercy

Lord, I am waking up to another day, and I already know where I will fall short. I will be impatient with the people I love, I will rush past the people who need a kind word, and I will forget that you are near. Before I reach for my list or my phone, I ask you for grace. Meet me in my weakness and give me patience I do not have on my own.

I also ask for your mercy, because I have not earned a fresh start. Forgive what I carried over from yesterday, the sharp word, the small dishonesty, the worry I kept rehearsing at night. Let your compassion be new this morning, and help me receive it without hiding. Teach me to extend the same mercy to the difficult person I will meet at work or at home.

Go before me into the hours ahead. Steady my hands for the tasks I must finish, guard my mind from needless fear, and give me eyes to notice the people who need encouragement today. Let me leave this day a little more like you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need your grace today and your mercy for every mistake I will make. Be near when I am tempted to lose my temper or hurry past someone who needs me. Help me move through this day with gentleness and trust in you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you wake, thanking God that his mercy is not used up overnight. Ask him to remind you of that fresh supply when yesterday’s failures still feel heavy.

Hebrews 4:16

Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.

(WEB)

Before the first demand of the day arrives, come boldly to God’s throne in prayer. Ask for the grace you need in that exact moment, whatever it is.

Psalm 103:8

The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape how you pray about other people today. Ask God to make you slow to anger and quick to show the same patience he has shown you.

Ephesians 2:4-5

4 But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)…

(WEB)

Use this passage to remember that God’s mercy comes from his love, not from your performance. Thank him that grace is the reason you are alive to pray this morning.

Psalm 90:14

Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request for the whole day. Ask that God’s steady love would fill the morning hours so you can rejoice and be glad in him before evening comes.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this in the first ten minutes after you get out of bed, before the news, messages or your to-do list take over. Sit on the edge of the bed or in your favorite chair, and keep a cup of coffee or water nearby so your hands have something to hold. If you have a short list of tasks or conversations ahead, glance at it and name one or two people in the prayer by name.

A spouse, roommate or friend can pray the same words with you over breakfast, or you can read it aloud to a child before school. You might also write the prayer on an index card and keep it in your bag or on the bathroom mirror, so you can return to it when the day tests your patience.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord’s grace meet you in every hour of this day, and may his mercy be new on every step you take. May he give you patience for the hard moments and kindness for the people you meet. May you rest in his faithfulness from morning until night.
