This short morning prayer for protection is written for the first minutes of your day, before the messages, meetings and errands start pulling at your attention. It asks God to guard your body, your mind and the people you will meet, and it can be read aloud exactly as written or used as a starting point for words of your own.

Short Morning Prayer for Protection

Lord, I wake up today knowing that I cannot see what the hours ahead will hold. I may face traffic on the way to work, a difficult conversation with a coworker, a phone call that brings bad news, or a long list of tasks that feels heavier than I can carry. I ask you to go before me into each of these moments and stand between me and whatever would harm my body, my peace or my faith.

Guard my going out and my coming in. Keep my hands steady, my eyes alert and my heart soft toward the people I will see today, including the ones who are hard to love. Where I am tempted to worry, remind me that you are already present in every room I will enter. Where I feel weak, let your strength be the thing that holds me up. Shield my children, my spouse, my parents and my friends from harm I cannot prevent on my own. Thank you that nothing reaches me that has not first passed through your hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, before I step out the door, I give you this day. Cover me on the road, at my desk, and in every conversation. Guard the people I love and the people I will meet. Keep my mind clear and my heart at rest, because I know you are near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this psalm to ask God to watch over your going out and your coming in. Read it slowly and let each phrase become a request for the specific trips, commutes and errands waiting for you today.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the places you will go that feel least safe to you. Ask God to send his angels to guard your steps, especially on roads, stairs or any setting where you feel uneasy.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to the hardest moment you expect today, whether it is a hard diagnosis, a tense meeting or an uncertain phone call. Ask the Shepherd to walk through that valley with you rather than leaving you to face it alone.

2 Thessalonians 3:3

But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you, and guard you from the evil one.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your own faithfulness under pressure today. Ask the Lord to guard you from the evil that tries to pull you into bitterness, fear or careless speech.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel shaky before the day has begun. Ask God to remind you that he is with you, and let his promise of strength steady you for each task on your list.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still sitting on the edge of your bed, before you reach for your phone. If you can, keep a glass of water or a cup of coffee in your hands while you speak, so that your body has something ordinary to hold while your heart turns toward God. Some people find it helpful to pray it again at the front door, or in the car before the engine starts.

If you share a home, consider praying it aloud for the people you live with, or ask a spouse, roommate or friend to pray it over you once a week. You can also write the shorter version on a sticky note and place it on your bathroom mirror or steering wheel as a reminder to pause in the middle of a busy morning.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you through every hour. May he keep your going out and your coming in, guard your heart from fear, and give you peace that holds steady when the day becomes unpredictable. May you be carried, covered and held, wherever your steps lead.
