This is a short evening prayer for the hours when sleep will not come, when your mind keeps circling the day or the night ahead. It is meant for the bed, the dark kitchen, or the edge of the couch at two in the morning. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries into your own words.
Short Prayer After a Sleepless Night
Lord, I am awake again, and my thoughts are running ahead of me. I am tired in my body, but my mind will not settle. I think about the conversation I could have handled better, the bills on the counter, the test results I am waiting on, and the people I love who are hurting. Right now I bring all of it to you, one thing at a time, and I ask you to take what I cannot carry.
Thank you that you do not sleep, and that you are not surprised by my wakefulness. You see this room, this hour, and every worry I have not yet named. I release the day to you. Forgive me for what I did wrong, and help me set down what was never mine to fix. Stay near me in the quiet, and remind me that I am known and kept even when I cannot rest.
Watch over my family while they sleep, and guard my home through the night. Give my body the rest it needs, and let my thoughts slow down like a tide going out. When morning comes, let me meet it with a clearer heart. I trust you with the hours I cannot control. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am awake and I do not know why my mind is so loud. I give you this worry, and this one, and the one I keep returning to. Hold what I cannot hold. Quiet my heart, steady my breathing, and let me rest in your care for the rest of this night. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Pray this verse slowly when you feel the fear of being alone with your thoughts. Let each phrase be a statement of trust, not a demand. Notice how the psalmist names both lying down and sleeping, as if rest itself is a gift to receive.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Use this verse to confess that you have been trying to hold everything together through your own effort. Ask God to teach you to stop striving so hard. Let the image of God giving rest to his beloved change how you think about the hours you have lost.
Psalm 121:3-4
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

Read this passage as a promise that someone is awake on your behalf. Pray it over the people you love who are also restless tonight. Thank God that the one who watches over Israel does not doze or drift off.
Matthew 11:28
“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
(WEB)
Bring your exhaustion, both physical and emotional, into this invitation. Pray it by naming one specific weight you are tired of carrying. Ask Jesus to show you what it looks like to come to him instead of pushing through alone.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Pray this passage by turning each worry into a short request. Paul pairs anxiety with prayer and thanksgiving, so try thanking God for one good thing from today before you ask for anything else. Then wait quietly for the peace he promises.
How to Pray This Prayer
Try praying it sitting up in bed with the lamp off and one hand resting on your chest or your knee. Slow your breathing for a few breaths before you begin. If your mind wanders in the middle, go back to the last line you remember and keep going. There is no need to finish quickly.
If you share a room or a house, you can pray it quietly, or you can ask a spouse, roommate, or friend to pray it with you by phone or over a short call. Some people keep a notebook beside the bed and write down the worries they are handing over, then close the notebook and leave it there until morning.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who never slumbers keep you through this night and hold every thought you cannot quiet. May his peace settle over your home like a soft covering, and may you wake to find that you were carried the whole time.
