This short prayer is written for the days after you have lost someone you love, when the house is quiet and words are hard to find. You can pray it aloud as it is written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own sentences where your heart needs them. It works well first thing in the morning, late at night, or any time the ache rises up without warning.

Short Prayer After Losing a Loved One

Father, you know the name I am carrying today and the empty place it has left in my life. I miss them in small ways I did not expect: the chair by the window, the sound of their voice in the next room, the question I wanted to ask them. Be near me in the hours when the grief feels heavier than I can hold. Help me remember that you were not surprised by this loss and that you have not stepped away from me in it.

Give me rest when my thoughts run in circles, and let me sleep without fear. Teach me how to be gentle with myself, especially on the days when I cannot make sense of anything. Hold the people who loved them alongside me, and let us lean on one another instead of pretending we are fine. Keep the memories of them close, both the joyful ones and the painful ones, and help me trust that love does not end with a goodbye. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am missing someone today, and it hurts more than I can say. Be close to me right now. Steady my breathing, calm my mind, and remind me that you see my tears. Carry what I cannot carry on my own, and help me take the next small step. Thank you for the person I loved and for the grief that shows how much they mattered. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this when your heart feels broken and you wonder whether God is close. Ask him to draw near to you in the specific way you are hurting today, and thank him that his nearness does not depend on how strong you feel.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring the wounds of your loss to God in plain words, naming them one by one. Ask him to bind up what has been torn open, and to begin the slow work of healing that you cannot rush or manufacture yourself.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let Jesus speak comfort into your mourning. Tell him you are grieving, and ask him to make his promise real to you in the coming weeks, even if the comfort arrives quietly.

John 11:35

Jesus wept.

(WEB)

Remember that Jesus wept at a grave even though he knew he would raise Lazarus. Pray that God would give you permission to cry without shame, and that you would sense his compassion as you weep.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray against the fear that the separation is final or that God’s love has gone too. Ask him to hold you firmly to his love, and to help you rest in the truth that nothing, not even death, can cut you off from it.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still, such as early morning with a cup of tea or in the car before you go inside. Keep a photo, a letter, or a small object that belonged to the person near you while you pray, and let your hands rest on it or hold it. If you have a friend, pastor, or family member who also grieves, invite them to pray the prayer with you, reading a line each and letting silence fill the gaps.

Do not worry about praying perfectly. If your voice breaks or you lose your place, simply stop and say, “Lord, you know what I mean,” and continue when you are able. You may find it helpful to return to this prayer each day for a while, and to notice over time how the words feel different as the weeks pass.

A Blessing to Close

May the God of all comfort surround you with his steady presence in the days ahead. May he hold your sorrow gently, strengthen you for each ordinary task, and let his peace settle over you like a warm blanket on a cold night. May you feel the love of those around you and the love of the Father who never lets go.
