This short prayer during a move is for the days when boxes are stacked in every room, the old address still feels like home, and the new one has not yet. You can pray it in the car before you leave, in an empty kitchen the night before, or the first evening you sit down on an unfamiliar floor. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer During a Move

Lord, you know every room I am leaving and every road I have yet to drive. Thank you that you were already in the old house before I arrived and that you will be in the new one before I unpack. I feel tired in my body and scattered in my mind. Gather up my thoughts the way I gather up the boxes, one at a time, and help me set down what I do not need to carry.

Be with the people who are helping me lift and carry, and with the ones who are missing me already. Keep my children feeling safe as their world shifts, and keep me from snapping at them when I am worn out. Show me the small kindnesses I can offer and receive. Where I am anxious about money, schools, friends or the first Sunday in a new church, give me enough courage for today and trust you with the rest.

Make this new place a home in your time and not only in mine. Bless the door I walk through, the keys in my hand and the first meal we eat on paper plates. Let me remember that I am not moving beyond your reach. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am standing in the middle of all this, unsure where to put my hands. Steady me. Go before us on the road and settle us into the new rooms. Help me be patient with myself and with the people around me. Let this be a place where we can rest and grow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Deuteronomy 31:8

The LORD himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.”

(WEB)

Moses spoke these words to Israel just before they crossed into a land they had never seen. Pray them over the new address, asking God to go ahead of you and to be present in every unfamiliar room before you enter it.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This psalm was sung by travelers heading up toward Jerusalem. Pray it as you pull out of the driveway and again when you arrive, trusting that God keeps watch over your going out and your coming in.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Isaiah addresses a people facing hard passages and frightening crossings. Use this verse when the move feels like too much water or too much fire, asking God to be with you in the difficult stretches rather than promising they will be easy.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

The psalmist imagines going to the farthest edges of the earth and finding God already there. Pray this when you feel far from familiar faces, reminding yourself that no distance from your old life is too great for his presence.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him and rest. Pray this at the end of a long packing day, placing your exhaustion in his hands and asking for the rest he offers in the middle of change.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full version in the empty kitchen on the last night in the old house, when the cupboards are bare and the sound of your own footsteps echoes. Holding a box or a roll of tape can help your hands stay busy while your heart slows down. If your family is involved, invite them to say the short version together before the first load goes in the van.

Pray it again when you walk into the new place for the first time, perhaps standing in the doorway before anything is set down. Ask a friend or your pastor to pray it with you or over you, since a move is easier to carry when someone else is holding part of the weight. Return to it on the hard days, such as the first grocery run in a new town or the first night you wake up not knowing where you are.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and follow behind you as you move from one place to the next. May he make your new home a place of peace, your neighbors a source of kindness, and your family a safe harbor through every change. May you find rest in him wherever the boxes finally come to rest.
