This short prayer is for the moments when you need courage and your own strength feels thin: a hard conversation, a diagnosis you are waiting on, a decision that could change everything, or a fear you cannot name. Pray it when your heart is pounding and you need to steady yourself before you act or before you speak. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your fear is specific.

Short Prayer When You Need Courage

Lord, I come to you because I am afraid, and I would rather be honest with you than pretend I am fine. My chest feels tight, and my mind keeps running ahead to everything that could go wrong. I do not have to pretend with you. You already know what I am walking into, and you already know what I am tempted to dread.

So I ask you to give me the courage I do not have on my own. Steady my hands and quiet the voices telling me I will fail. Help me take the next step, not the whole road at once. Let me remember that you have been faithful before, in situations that scared me too, and that you have not left me to face them alone.

Be near me in this moment. Give me the words I need, the patience to listen, and the strength to do what is right even if I shake while I do it. I trust you with the outcome, and I trust you with me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am scared, and I need your courage now. Be with me in this breath and in the next one. Steady my heart, slow my thoughts, and help me take the next right step. I am not facing this alone. Thank you that you are with me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel small against a task that looks too large. Ask God to remind you that his presence goes with you into the room, the meeting, or the hospital hallway, so courage can rest on his nearness rather than your own confidence.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

Read this slowly when fear feels loud. Name the specific thing you fear, then pray that God would be your light and your stronghold in that exact place, so the fear loses some of its power to define what happens next.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel overwhelmed and tempted to give up before you begin. Let God’s words to Israel become your own prayer: ask him to strengthen you, help you, and hold you steady, one hour at a time.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when timidity is what is holding you back from speaking up or acting. Ask God to fill you with the power, love, and self-control he gives, so that you can do what you are called to do without being ruled by your nerves.

Psalm 56:3

When I am afraid, I will put my trust in you.

(WEB)

Turn to this verse in the middle of an anxious day, especially when the fear returns again and again. Speak your trust out loud, and ask God to help you choose trust in the moments when fear rises, even if the feeling does not change right away.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this before the hard thing begins, such as in the car before a meeting, sitting on the edge of the bed before a phone call, or in a quiet corner of the waiting room. Keep one hand on something solid, like the steering wheel, a pen, or the edge of your chair, and let your breathing slow with each line. Pray slowly enough that the words land on you and not just pass by.

You can also ask a friend, spouse, or small group member to pray this with you or for you when you are too tired to find the words. Sometimes courage grows most when someone else holds the request alongside you. Afterward, take one small action you were afraid to take, and thank God for the step even if it was imperfect.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you in the place you fear most. May he steady your heart, strengthen your hands, and give you the words you need at the right moment. May you rest in the knowledge that you are not alone, and may peace meet you in the courage you find today.
