This short prayer is for the moment you know you have done wrong and need God to forgive you. It can be prayed in the quiet after a harsh word, when guilt keeps replaying an old mistake, or when you simply sense the distance that sin creates between you and God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Short Prayer When You Need Forgiveness

Lord, I come to you without excuses. I know what I did, and I know I cannot undo it by feeling bad about it. I have spoken in anger, I have kept score, I have chosen what I wanted over what you asked of me. Some of it I did in secret, and some of it I did in plain sight where others saw it. Please see my heart now, even the parts I would rather hide, and help me stop pretending it is smaller than it is.

Thank you that forgiveness does not depend on how well I explain myself or how much I punish myself afterward. You offer it freely to anyone who turns to you honestly. So I turn to you now. Forgive me for the wrong I have done, and cleanse what my conscience will not let rest. Help me make it right with the people I have hurt where I can, and give me the courage to say the words I have been avoiding.

Thank you that your mercy is not used up by my failures. Teach me to receive your forgiveness without clinging to the guilt, and to extend the same grace to myself and to others. Restore what I have damaged between us, and set me back on the path of walking with you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I have sinned, and I am sorry. Forgive me, and clean up the mess in my heart. Help me take the next step toward the person I have wronged, and help me accept the forgiveness you already give. Thank you that your mercy is new each morning, even on the days I have failed most. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and let the word “confess” shape your prayer. Name the specific wrong in front of God rather than speaking in general terms. Then receive the promise that he is faithful and just to forgive, and let that promise answer the guilt that is pressing on you.

Psalm 51:10

Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

(WEB)

David asks for more than forgiveness here; he asks for a new heart. Pray this line when you feel the forgiveness is received but the habit that caused the sin still clings. Ask God to create something clean in you that does not depend on your willpower alone.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

When guilt keeps returning, pray this verse to remind yourself how far God has put your sin away. Let the picture of distance and separation work against the habit of rehearsing the same failure over and over in your own mind.

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel stained and unworthy. God invites the honest conversation, and he promises to make the crimson sin clean. Thank him for that exchange, and ask him to make you willing to come to him again whenever you fall.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Forgiveness received from God is meant to flow outward. Pray this verse when you are ready to forgive someone else, or when you need to ask for their forgiveness, and ask God to help you be kind and tender in the way you speak and act.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as the end of the day or early morning before the house wakes up, and sit somewhere without distractions. A notebook or a note on your phone can help you name the specific wrong before you pray. Some people find it helps to hold a pen or to kneel, using the body to show that the heart is ready to lower itself before God.

If you are praying for forgiveness on behalf of a family member, a friend, or a church community, you can pray this prayer together with them, or ask a trusted friend to pray it with you. Hearing another person speak words of confession often makes it easier to say them yourself. Finish by making one concrete step toward reconciliation, even if that step is only a message or a phone call.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgives all who turn to him wrap you in his mercy today. May you rest in the freedom he gives, lift your head without shame, and walk forward knowing that your past does not have the final word over your life. May his peace settle on your heart and guard your mind.
