Short prayers for birthdays give you words to offer God when a new year of life begins, whether it is your own birthday, a child’s, a spouse’s, or a friend’s. They work best in the morning, at the table with a cake or a card nearby, or during a quiet moment on the day itself. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the person you are celebrating.

Short Prayers for Birthdays

Father, thank you for this day and for the gift of another year of life. You knew this person before they were born, and you have carried them through every season since. Thank you for the years behind us, the hard ones as well as the good ones, and for the ways you have stayed close through each of them.

As we step into a new year, we ask for your steady presence. Give wisdom for the decisions ahead, health for the body, and patience for the days that feel long. Where there is worry about the future, quiet it with your peace. Where there is grief over what has been lost, meet it with your comfort. Let this year be shaped by your faithfulness more than by our fears.

Lord, make this birthday a reminder that our days are in your hands. Help us to celebrate with gratitude, to love the people around us well, and to live each new year with purpose. Bless the one we honor today with joy that runs deeper than any party. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for the gift of this life and this year. Hold us steady as we begin again, and grant wisdom for what lies ahead. Fill this day with gladness, and let the people we love feel your nearness in the simple moments. We trust you with what comes next. Amen.

(WEB)

This ancient blessing works well as a closing prayer on a birthday. Pray it slowly over the person you are honoring, asking God to keep, favor, and give peace to them in the year ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time on the birthday itself, perhaps early in the morning before the day gets busy or in the evening once candles have been blown out. Sit somewhere comfortable and hold a card, a photo, or a small gift in your hands as you pray. Doing this turns the words from a recitation into an act of remembering.

If you are praying for someone else, consider reading the prayer together with them, or invite a family member or friend to join you. You might also write the prayer on a card and tuck it inside the birthday card as a gift. Many people keep such words for years and return to them when a new year begins.

A Blessing to Close

May God go before you into this new year, walking with you through every change. May his peace settle over your home and your heart, and may you know joy in the ordinary days as well as the celebrations. The Lord bless you and keep you, and make his face shine upon you.
