These short prayers for men are written for the everyday moments when a man needs to bring his work, his family, his temptations and his fears before God. You can pray them in the morning before the day takes hold, at a red light, in the quiet of a truck cab, or late at night when sleep will not come. Read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart needs them.

Short Prayers for Men

Lord, I come to you as I am, not as I wish I were. You know the pressure I carry at work, the expectations I feel from the people who depend on me, and the quiet fear that I will not measure up. Help me to remember that my worth does not rise and fall with my performance. Teach me to lead with gentleness and to listen before I speak, especially when I am tired or frustrated.

Father, make me a man who keeps his promises, who tells the truth when it costs him something, and who does not hide behind silence. Guard my heart from the pull of pride and from the temptation to find my identity in approval, money or success. Where I have failed the people closest to me, give me the humility to say I am sorry and the courage to make it right. Strengthen my marriage, my friendships and my relationship with my children, and let me be present with them today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am not sure how to get through this moment well, so I ask for your help. Steady my hands, slow my temper and give me the words that are honest and kind. Help me to lead with courage and to love the people in front of me without pretending I have it all together. Be my strength where mine runs out, and remind me that I am not walking alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this when fear is rising over a decision, a deadline or a responsibility you did not ask for. Ask God to make the courage in this verse your own, and thank him that his presence goes with you into the room.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to shape your daily choices toward justice, mercy and humility. It works well as a plain request at the start of a workday, when you want your character to match your convictions.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to the places where you feel you must figure everything out alone. Pray it as a surrender of your plans, asking the Lord to guide your steps even where you cannot see the way ahead.

Ephesians 6:10

Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel depleted and know you cannot keep going on your own resources. Ask God to make you strong in him, not in your own willpower, and to renew you for the work he has given you.

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and ask the Spirit to grow these qualities in you where you are most short on patience, kindness or self-control. Name one of them aloud and ask God to form it in you this week.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many men find it easiest to pray before the day begins, while coffee is still hot and the house is quiet. Keep this prayer somewhere you will see it, such as on the dashboard, the bathroom mirror or the first page of your planner. A short walk or a drive gives you a natural pause to say it slowly, and you can pray the shorter version whenever a conversation turns tense.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else, such as a brother, a father, a son or a friend who knows the pressures you face. Take turns reading a line each, or ask a trusted friend to pray it over you. Praying together keeps you honest, reminds you that you are not alone, and gives you someone to ask how it is going.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you steady courage for the work in front of you and quiet confidence in his love. May he make your words honest, your hands gentle and your heart patient. May he guard you where you are weak and strengthen you where you are tired, and may you rest today knowing that you are held.
