This simple prayer is for the days after you have lost someone you love, when grief has arrived and the words will not come on their own. It is meant for the kitchen table in the early morning, the car after the funeral, or the quiet hour before sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own sorrow in the same spirit.

Simple Prayer After Losing a Loved One

Lord, you see the empty chair and the phone that no longer rings with their voice. You know the name I keep starting to say and then stop. I am tired, and some days I do not know what to do with my hands or my hours. Please be near me in the ordinary moments, when I reach for a coffee cup they always used, or when a song in the grocery store catches me off guard.

I bring you my memories, both the good ones that make me smile and the hard ones that still ache. I ask you to hold the person I love in your care, and to let them rest in the peace that only you can give. Help me to remember that this loss is not the end of their story or of our love. Give me honest tears when I need them, and gentle company when I am alone.

Comfort me in the weeks ahead, when others have gone back to their lives and the quiet feels heavy. Keep my family and friends close, and show me one kind thing I can accept today. I trust that you are faithful even when I cannot feel it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I miss them, and the ache is loud right now. Hold me as I hold this grief. Remember the one I love in your presence, and steady my breathing for the next hour. Be my comfort when no one else can see how I feel. Thank you that I can come to you just as I am. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this when your heart feels crushed by the loss. Ask God to draw near to you in that exact place of pain, trusting that he does not turn away from broken hearts.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to bind up the wounds that grief has opened. Tell him specifically where it hurts today, whether that is sleep, memory, or the silence in your home.

John 11:25-26

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

(WEB)

Read these words slowly and let them shape your prayer about the one you lost. Thank Jesus for his promise of resurrection and ask him to strengthen your hope in it.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion to God in prayer, naming the weight you have carried since the loss. Ask him to give you rest in the parts of your life that feel most depleted right now.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

13 But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this passage as a way of grieving with hope rather than without it. Ask God to help you hold your sorrow honestly while trusting that the one you love is held by him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer at a set time each day, such as first thing in the morning or just before bed, because grief tends to surface at predictable hours. Sit somewhere that feels safe, and keep a photo or a small object of your loved one nearby. Holding something in your hands can steady you as you speak, and it gives your body a way to stay present with the words.

You do not need to finish the prayer in one sitting or get every sentence right. If a line feels too heavy, pause, breathe, and continue when you are ready. You might also invite a trusted friend, pastor, or family member to pray it with you or over you, which reminds you that grief is easier to carry together.

A Blessing to Close

May the God of all comfort surround this grieving heart with steady love, and may tender mercy meet each hour that feels too long. May the one who has gone rest in his care, and may the hope of reunion grow quietly stronger with every passing day. May the reader find strength for the next step and peace for the night ahead.
