This simple prayer before a new job is for the days just before you start work somewhere unfamiliar, when nerves and hope are tangled together. You can pray it in the morning before you leave the house, in the car on the way to the interview, or the night before your first shift. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer Before a New Job

Lord, you know the hours I have spent wondering whether I am ready for this job. You know the questions I keep rehearsing, the new faces I will meet, and the skills I am still learning to trust. I bring all of it to you now and ask you to steady my heart. Help me remember that the work I am about to do is not something I face alone, and that you have already been present in every step that brought me here.

Give me clear thinking when I am asked things I do not yet know. Give me patience with myself when I make mistakes, and humility to ask for help without shame. Let me treat my coworkers and managers with honesty and kindness, and help me work with integrity even when no one is watching. If there are people I will need to lean on, send them to me, and if there are people I am meant to encourage, open my eyes to them.

Whatever this new season brings, let my work be a place where your goodness can be seen. Guard my family and my sleep, and keep my worries from crowding out the things that matter most. I trust you with the outcome, with the commute, with the pay, and with the people I have not met yet. Thank you for going before me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am nervous about this new job, and I ask you to calm my mind. Help me do good work, speak with kindness, and ask for help when I need it. Be with me in the first hour and the first week, and let me rest in knowing I am not alone. Thank you for the open door. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel pulled between what you know and what you cannot yet see. Pray that you will lean on God’s wisdom rather than your own fears, and ask him to guide each decision you make in the first weeks.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Joshua received this command before entering unfamiliar territory. Pray it over yourself as you walk into a new workplace, asking God to replace fear with courage and to remind you that he goes with you.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul invites believers to bring every anxious thought to God in prayer. Use this passage to hand over the worries about performance, approval and money, asking for the peace that guards the heart and mind.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This psalm speaks of God’s watchful care as you come and go. Pray it as you leave for work each morning, asking that the Lord would keep your going out and coming in throughout this season.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Paul reminds workers that their labor ultimately serves the Lord. Pray this verse when you feel small or unnoticed, asking God to help you work with sincerity and to find meaning in ordinary tasks.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer in the quiet of the early morning, before the day’s messages and noise begin. Sit at the kitchen table with a cup of something warm, or stand by the window as you dress. Keeping one hand open on your lap or resting on your heart can help the words settle in your body as well as your mind.

You might also ask a friend, a pastor, or a family member to pray this prayer with you, or for you, in the days before you start. Some people write it on an index card and keep it in a pocket or on the dashboard to read again during a break. Let the prayer be a beginning, and return to it whenever the nerves rise up again.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before this new worker and walk beside them through every unfamiliar door. May they find steady hands in their colleagues, clear light for their decisions, and rest for their evenings. May God’s peace guard their heart as they begin, and may they know that their work is seen and held by a faithful Father.
