This simple prayer during a life transition is for the seasons when something is ending or beginning and the ground feels unsteady. A new job, a move, a marriage, a loss, a diagnosis, an empty nest: any of these can leave you unsure of who you are in the new place. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or treat it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer During a Life Transition

Father, you already know what is changing in my life. Some of it I chose, and some of it was handed to me, and I am not sure I am ready for either. I feel the weight of the unknown in my chest and in my sleep. Be near me in the mornings when the old routine no longer fits and in the evenings when the quiet feels too loud. Help me take one honest step at a time instead of trying to see the whole road at once.

Lord, I confess that I want to hold on to what was familiar, even when it was not good for me. Loosen my grip where I need to let go, and steady my hands where I need to hold on. Give me patience with myself, kindness toward the people who are changing alongside me, and the courage to ask for help when I need it. Let me remember that you were at work before this season began and that you will not leave me in the middle of it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this change is bigger than I can carry on my own. Walk with me through the next hour, the next conversation, and the next decision. Settle my anxious thoughts and remind me that you are already in the place I am going. Give me enough light for the next step and enough grace for the one after that. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the change feels like deep water or a fire you must walk through. Ask God to be the one who keeps you afloat and keeps you from being consumed, and thank him for going into the difficulty with you.

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you are leaving one place and entering another. Pray that the Lord would guard every departure and arrival, both the ones you can see and the ones still ahead.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

This was spoken to Joshua as he stepped into leadership he had not asked for. Let it become your prayer for courage, and ask God to remind you that his presence is not limited to the places you already know.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these lines on a morning when yesterday feels heavier than today. Thank God that his mercies are renewed each day, and ask him to give you enough mercy for the day you are actually living.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes about turning anxiety into prayer. Bring each worry to God by name, including the ones about money, family, health and identity, and ask him to guard your heart and mind while you wait for clarity.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as early in the morning with a cup of coffee or in the car before you go into a new workplace or a difficult meeting. Keep a pen and paper nearby, and as you pray, write down the specific fears you name. Afterward, you might fold the paper and put it in a drawer or a book as a record of what you handed over. Holding something in your hands, like a ring, a stone or your own wrist, can help you stay present while you speak.

This prayer also works well shared. A spouse, a close friend, a small group or a pastor can pray it over you, or you can read it together with a family member who is facing the same change. Invite them to add one line of their own, so the words belong to the people walking through the season with you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every new room and stay with you when the old room is gone. May he give you steady peace in the hours of uncertainty and fresh hope with each sunrise. May you find yourself held, known and sent forward with courage in the season that is now unfolding.
