This simple prayer for a forgiving heart is for the moments when you know you should let go of a hurt but cannot yet find the willingness inside you. You can pray it when a memory of someone’s words or actions rises up again, before a difficult conversation, or at the end of a day when resentment has been sitting heavy. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God in the same spirit.

Simple Prayer for a Forgiving Heart

Father, you know exactly what has happened and how deeply it has hurt me. I bring the anger, the disappointment, and the replaying of old scenes to you, because I do not want to carry them alone anymore. I confess that some part of me wants the other person to feel the weight of what they did, and I am tired of how that wanting takes up room in my thoughts.

Soften my heart where it has grown hard. Help me remember how much mercy you have shown me, and let that memory make space for mercy toward the one who wronged me. I do not have to feel fully ready to forgive today. I only ask you to give me the willingness to take the first step, and to keep working in me when I cannot see the change yet. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am holding on to this hurt, and I need your help to let it go. Remind me of the forgiveness you have given me, and make me willing to extend it now. Guard my thoughts when the old story starts to play again, and teach me to release the person to you. Thank you that you are patient with me as I learn. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul ties our forgiveness of others directly to what God has done for us in Christ. When you pray this verse, ask God to make his kindness the pattern you follow, especially when your feelings say otherwise.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

This verse names forgiveness as something we do because we have already been forgiven. Pray it slowly, letting each part remind you that the Lord has been generous with you first.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Jesus links our own forgiveness with our willingness to forgive others. Pray this with humility, asking God to show you where you still hold back and to help you release it.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

David speaks of God removing our sins as far as the east is from the west. Bring this verse to God when you feel stuck in the past, trusting him to help you stop revisiting what he has already put behind you.

Romans 12:19

Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.”

(WEB)

Paul reminds believers that vengeance belongs to the Lord. Pray this verse to release your urge to get even, and ask God to be the one who settles what is right.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as first thing in the morning or just before bed, when you can speak without rushing. Sitting in a chair with an open Bible or a cup of tea in your hands can help you stay present. If the hurt flares up during the day, you can pray the shorter version silently while you wait for a meeting or stand at the sink.

You might also ask a trusted friend, mentor, or small group leader to pray this with you or for you. Saying the words out loud alongside someone who cares can make the willingness feel more possible. Return to this prayer as often as you need, knowing that forgiveness is often a process rather than a single decision.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgave you fully make your heart gentle and free. May his peace guard your thoughts when old wounds stir, and may his grace give you courage to release what has been held too long. Go in the strength of the one who is patient with you, and trust that he is at work in you.
