This simple prayer is for the moments when you need patience: a child who will not get dressed, a diagnosis still waiting for results, a job search that drags on, or a long line you cannot leave. You can pray it in the morning to set the tone for the day, or in the middle of a hard hour when your temper is short. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where they fit.

Simple Prayer When You Need Patience

Lord, you know how quickly I want things to be finished. I want the phone call to come, the bills to settle, the lump to be nothing, the tension in my home to ease. Right now I feel stretched thin, and my words come out sharper than I mean them to. Slow my heart down so I can hear you over the noise of my own hurry. Help me remember that you are not late, even when I feel like I am waiting alone.

Give me the kind of patience that does not give up but also does not panic. When the day goes sideways, let me pause before I react. When the answer is still “not yet,” let me trust that you are working in ways I cannot see. Fill the empty spaces in my schedule with your presence, and keep me from filling them with worry. Teach me to wait with open hands rather than clenched fists.

Thank you that your patience with me is never used up. Let my life reflect a little of that steady grace toward the people around me. I hand you the outcome I am so anxious about, and I ask you to carry the parts of this wait that are too heavy for me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am running out of patience and I need you right now. Slow my breathing and quiet my thoughts. Help me respond with gentleness instead of frustration, and remind me that you are with me in this moment and in whatever comes next. Give me enough grace for the next five minutes, and I will trust you with the rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

When you feel rushed, pray this verse slowly, letting each phrase settle before you move to the next. Ask God to help you stop striving long enough to recognize who he is. Patience often begins with that kind of stillness.

Romans 5:3-4

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope…

(WEB)

Paul connects endurance with a character that God is shaping in us. When you are in a long wait, pray that this season would produce steadiness and hope rather than bitterness. Ask God to show you what he is building in you now.

Lamentations 3:25-26

25 The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.

(WEB)

These lines describe waiting quietly for the Lord’s salvation as something good. Pray them when you feel like waiting is pointless, asking God to help you find goodness in the quiet hours. Let the verse turn your attention from the delay to the One who is faithful.

James 1:4

Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

(WEB)

James speaks of patience being allowed to finish its work in us. Pray this when you are tempted to rush past discomfort, asking God to let perseverance do its full work. Ask him to make you complete rather than merely comfortable.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

This verse promises renewed strength to those who wait on the Lord. Pray it when you are tired of waiting, asking God to refresh your energy and steady your step. Let it remind you that waiting on him is an active trust, not a passive sitting still.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the longer version when you first wake up, before your phone or your to-do list pulls your attention away. Sit on the edge of your bed or at the kitchen table with a cup of something warm in your hands. Holding a mug or a pen can help your body settle while your mind catches up.

When the moment is urgent, use the shorter prayer and pray it under your breath while you wait in the car, in line, or in a hallway. If you are praying for someone else’s patience, such as a spouse, a child, or a coworker, you can pray this prayer with them or simply for them. Asking a friend to pray it with you on a hard day can make the waiting feel less lonely.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who is never hurried give you a calm heart in the middle of this season. May he meet you in each delay with a steady peace, and may his faithfulness go before you into whatever comes next.
