This is a simple prayer for the moment you want to give up, when the work feels pointless, the days feel heavy, and you are not sure you can keep going. It is written for the tired parent, the struggling student, the person sitting in a parked car before going back into a hard situation. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer When You Want to Give Up

Lord, I am tired. I do not have a neat way to say it. I have been pushing through for so long that I have started to wonder whether any of it matters, and I am tempted to stop trying altogether. The bills are still waiting, the people I love still need me, and I feel like I have nothing left to give. Please meet me here, in this exact place, without asking me to be stronger than I am right now.

You know the things that have worn me down. You know the conversation I keep avoiding, the goal that seems farther away each week, and the quiet fear that I am failing the people who depend on me. Help me to be honest with you about all of it. Show me the next small step instead of the whole mountain. Give me enough rest to get through today, and enough hope to try again tomorrow.

Thank you that you do not turn away from weary people. Hold me up when my own strength runs out, and remind me that I am not carrying this alone. Let me rest in your faithfulness, even when I cannot feel it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I want to quit, and I need you right now. I am worn out and discouraged. Give me one more breath, one more faithful step, and one more reason to hope. Remind me that you see me, that you have not left me, and that I can ask you for help this very minute. Keep me going today, and I will trust you with tomorrow. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

When you feel drained, pray this verse as a request: ask God to give strength to your tired body and weary mind. Name the places where you have run out of power, and invite him to supply what you lack.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this when discouragement feels crushing. Tell God that you are brokenhearted or crushed in spirit, and ask him to draw near to you in that exact place rather than waiting for you to feel better first.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

This verse speaks directly to the urge to stop. Ask God to help you keep doing good work without growing weary, and to show you the harvest that may come in his timing, even if you cannot see it yet.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and pray it as an invitation. Bring your exhaustion to Jesus, name what is weighing you down, and ask him to give you the rest that only he can offer, even if your circumstances stay the same for now.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

When you feel your weakness is proof that you should quit, pray this verse as a reminder that God’s grace is enough. Ask him to show you where his strength is working through your limitations, and to help you stop measuring your worth by your performance.

How to Pray This Prayer

Find a quiet place where you will not be interrupted for a few minutes. If you can, sit with your feet on the floor and your hands open in your lap, or hold something ordinary such as a mug of tea or the edge of a table. Physical stillness can help a restless mind slow down. Read the main prayer once slowly, then pause after each paragraph to let the words settle before moving on.

If you are too overwhelmed to pray alone, ask a friend, a spouse, or a pastor to pray it with you or over you. Saying it out loud to another person can make the weight feel less isolating. You can also keep the shorter version on your phone or on a card in your wallet, and pray it in the car, on a break at work, or while waiting for the kettle to boil.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give strength to the one who is tired, and peace to the one who feels like quitting. May he steady your steps, renew your hope, and remind you that your labor is not wasted in his hands. Rest today, knowing you are held, and keep going one faithful step at a time.
