When nothing seems to work, you need Scripture that meets you where you are: tired, discouraged, and unsure whether your effort is making any difference. These verses are gathered for that moment, when prayers feel unanswered and plans keep collapsing. What they share is a steady conviction that God is present, faithful, and at work even when you cannot see the result.

Verses for the Morning After Another Setback

Some days begin with the weight of yesterday already on your shoulders. The verses below are for that heavy first hour, when getting out of bed feels like the hardest task on the list and the day has not even started.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

The writer of Lamentations was surrounded by ruin, yet he remembered that God’s compassions do not run out. Before you check your phone or reread the bad email, speak these words aloud. Let them set the first thought of the day, so that mercy comes before worry.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

These verses describe a world shaking, yet they name God as a refuge close at hand. When everything you tried has failed, you are reminded that your security never rested on your own success. Write “God is my refuge” on a sticky note and place it where you will see it at lunch.

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Isaiah speaks to people who have run out of strength, and he promises renewal rather than mere endurance. When your energy is gone, this passage invites you to wait on the Lord instead of forcing another round of effort. Take a short walk and pray, asking for the strength you cannot manufacture.

Verses for When Your Prayers Feel Unanswered

Silence from heaven can feel like rejection, especially after you have asked again and again. The passages in this section address the quiet stretch between asking and seeing, and they encourage you to keep bringing your requests to God anyway.

Psalm 13:1-2

1 How long, the LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? 2 How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart every day? How long shall my enemy triumph over me?

(WEB)

David does not hide his frustration here; he asks how long God will forget him. This honesty is itself a form of prayer, and God welcomes it. Tonight, name the exact thing you are waiting for and say it plainly to God, without dressing it up.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

Paul says the Spirit helps us when we do not know what to pray for. If your words have run dry, this verse tells you that you are not expected to produce perfect language. Try praying in one short sentence, trusting that the Spirit carries what you cannot put into words.

Psalm 62:5-6

5 My soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my expectation is from him. 6 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress. I will not be shaken.

(WEB)

The psalmist calls his soul to wait in silence for God alone, because his hope comes from him. When your mind is racing through every possible outcome, this is an invitation to stop and rest. Set a timer for two minutes and simply breathe while repeating the first line.

Verses for Feeling Like Your Effort Is Wasted

Hard work that produces no visible fruit can make you question whether anything matters. These verses speak to faithfulness in the unseen places, where the results come slowly or not at all.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Paul writes to people who are tempted to quit doing good because the reward is delayed. The promise is that a harvest will come in its proper time. Write down one small act of faithfulness you will keep doing this week, even without a clear sign of progress.

1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord’s work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul ties steadfastness to the resurrection, so that labor in the Lord is never empty. Your work may feel invisible, yet this verse says it is not in vain. Thank God today for one task you finished, however small, and offer it to him as worship.

Ecclesiastes 11:6

In the morning sow your seed, and in the evening don’t withhold your hand; for you don’t know which will prosper, whether this or that, or whether they both will be equally good.

(WEB)

The Teacher advises sowing in the morning and in the evening, because you cannot know which seed will grow. This is a call to keep planting when you cannot predict the outcome. Choose one relationship or project to keep investing in this week, without demanding proof that it is working.

Verses for Remembering God’s Faithfulness in the Past

When the present looks bleak, looking back can restore perspective. These verses remind you that God has been faithful before and that his character does not change with your circumstances.

Lamentations 3:21

This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope.

(WEB)

In the middle of his grief, the writer chooses to call something to mind, and it is hope. Memory is not denial of pain but a deliberate turning toward God’s track record. List three times God helped you in the past and keep the list in your journal.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Moses encourages Israel as they face uncertain ground, promising that the Lord goes before them. The assurance is about presence, not a guaranteed outcome. Pray this verse over your next uncertain step, asking God to walk beside you in it.

Psalm 77:11-12

11 I will remember Yah’s deeds; for I will remember your wonders of old. 12 I will also meditate on all your work, and consider your doings.

(WEB)

Asaph moves from despair to remembrance, deciding to recall the deeds of the Lord. He does not pretend the present is easy, but he refuses to let it be the only story. Spend five minutes recalling a moment when God proved faithful and thank him for it by name.

How to Use These Verses

Reading Scripture once when you feel low may bring temporary comfort, but returning to the same few verses over several days builds a deeper trust. Write the ones that speak most to you on index cards and keep them in a pocket, a wallet, or beside your bed. Let them become familiar enough that they surface on their own during a hard moment.

Pair the reading with prayer rather than treating it as a substitute. Read a verse slowly, then speak back to God whatever it stirs in you, whether gratitude, anger, or simple tiredness. Some days you will feel lifted; other days the words will feel flat. Keep returning anyway, because faithfulness in reading mirrors the faithfulness you are hoping God will show you.

A Short Prayer for When Nothing Seems to Work

Father, I am tired, and I have tried so many things that seem to lead nowhere. I do not understand why the answers are slow in coming, but I am choosing to bring my weariness to you. Help me remember that you see what I cannot see, and that your faithfulness has not failed me before. Give me strength for the next step, and quiet my heart enough to hear your voice. Amen.
