Zechariah 10 is a short prophetic chapter about God’s care for a scattered people, the house of Judah and the house of Joseph, and the failure of false guides who leave them without direction. These questions suit a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. You can work through them in order, or pick the set that fits the time you have.

Zechariah 10 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a call to ask the LORD for rain, contrasting Him with household idols and false diviners who offer empty comfort. The people have wandered like sheep because their shepherds failed them. God then declares His anger at those leaders and His decision to visit His flock Himself, making them strong in battle.

From there the focus turns to restoration. God promises to strengthen Judah, save Joseph, gather the scattered people from many nations, and bring them home to the land. The chapter closes with the assurance that they will walk in His name.

Observation Questions

Use these questions at the start of the session to get everyone reading the text closely before anyone offers opinions. Ask a volunteer to read the relevant verses aloud first, then let the group point to specific words and phrases. Keep answers grounded in what the passage actually says.

Zechariah 10:1

Ask of the LORD rain in the spring time, the LORD who makes storm clouds, and he gives rain showers to everyone for the plants in the field.

Read this verse first to set the chapter’s central claim: the LORD is the true source of life and provision. It gives the group a clear picture of where to turn before the rest of the chapter explores the failures of other sources.

Zechariah 10:3

My anger is kindled against the shepherds, and I will punish the male goats; For the LORD of Armies has visited his flock, the house of Judah, and will make them as his majestic horse in the battle.

(WEB)

This verse holds the turning point of the chapter, where God’s anger toward the shepherds gives way to His visiting His flock. Reading it aloud helps the group notice the shift in tone and focus.

Zechariah 10:6

“I will strengthen the house of Judah, and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them back; for I have mercy on them; and they will be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and I will hear them.

(WEB)

Here God explains His motive for restoring His people, which is His mercy. Reading this verse slowly helps the group grasp that restoration flows from God’s character rather than from the people’s achievements.

Zechariah 10:9-10

9 I will sow them among the peoples; and they will remember me in far countries; and they will live with their children, and will return. 10 I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and there won’t be room enough for them.

These verses describe scattering, remembering, and return, with God’s promise to gather His people from many lands. Reading them together gives the group a sense of the scope of God’s faithfulness across distance and time.

Zechariah 10:12

I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they will walk up and down in his name,” says the LORD.

(WEB)

The chapter closes here with the promise that the people will be strengthened in the LORD and walk in His name. Ending the reading on this verse sends the group into the closing prayer with a note of hope and commitment.

Memory Verse for Zechariah 10

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come to you as people who have at times wandered like sheep and looked to other sources for comfort. Thank you that you are the one who gives rain and life, and that you visit your flock yourself. We confess the ways we have trusted things that cannot truly help us. Strengthen us in you this week, so that we walk in your name in our homes, our work, and our conversations. Gather the people we care about who feel scattered or alone, and draw them back to you. Help us to be faithful to one another as we follow the good shepherd. Amen.
