Zechariah 12 is a prophecy about Jerusalem and Judah in a coming day when the LORD himself will defend the city, pour out a spirit of grace and supplication, and turn the people’s grief into a mourning for the one they have pierced. These questions are written for a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. Each section moves from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily life.

Zechariah 12 at a Glance

The chapter opens with a solemn claim: the LORD who created the heavens and the earth is speaking. He announces that Jerusalem will become a cup of reeling and a burdensome stone for the surrounding nations, and that Judah’s leaders will be strengthened by the people of Jerusalem. Verses 4 to 9 describe a reversal in which the enemies’ horses and riders are struck, and Judah’s chieftains become like fire that consumes those nations.

The emotional center comes in verses 10 to 14. The people will receive a spirit of grace and supplication, look to the one they have pierced, and mourn as one mourns an only son. The mourning is then described family by family, from the house of David down through Nathan, Levi and the Shimeites, showing that the grief reaches every household.

Observation Questions

Use these questions first, before anyone offers an interpretation. Ask group members to point to the exact words in the passage, read them aloud, and resist explaining them until the text has been described carefully.

Zechariah 12:1

Zechariah 12:2-3

2 “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of reeling to all the surrounding peoples, and it will also be on Judah in the siege against Jerusalem. 3 It will happen in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.

These verses introduce the image of Jerusalem as a cup and a burdensome stone. Reading them together helps the group see the central picture of the chapter.

Zechariah 12:8

In that day the LORD will defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem. He who is feeble among them at that day will be like David, and David’s house will be like God, like the LORD’s angel before them.

This verse promises that the LORD will defend the people, and that the feeble will be like David. It offers hope to anyone who feels weak in the session.

Zechariah 12:10

I will pour on David’s house, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication; and they will look to me whom they have pierced; and they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for his only son, and will grieve bitterly for him, as one grieves for his firstborn.

(WEB)

This is the emotional and theological high point of the chapter. Reading it aloud invites the group to pause and consider the mourning and the one who was pierced.

Zechariah 12:11-12

11 In that day there will be a great mourning in Jerusalem, like the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon. 12 The land will mourn, every family apart; the family of David’s house apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart…

These verses describe the great mourning and begin the family-by-family listing. Reading them prepares the group for the discussion of how grief spreads through every household.

Memory Verse for Zechariah 12

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we thank you that you are the one who forms the human spirit and lays the foundation of the earth. We confess that we often rely on our own strength and forget to look to you. Pour out on us the spirit of grace and of supplication, so that we see clearly what our sin has cost and grieve it honestly. Strengthen the feeble among us as you promised to strengthen David’s house, and defend us as we follow you this week. We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
