This lesson teaches children that God protects His people and lives right in the middle of them. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach. Use it as a simple Old Testament story lesson for a Sunday school class or family devotion.
Big Idea
God is with His people, and He keeps them safe like a wall of fire. He loves His people so much that He wants them to come home.
Memory Verse
Zechariah 2:5
For I,’ says the LORD, ‘will be to her a wall of fire around it, and I will be the glory in the middle of her.
(WEB)
Have the children stand up and hold their arms out wide to make a big circle, like a wall around them. Then they can put their hands over their hearts while saying the last part together. This helps them picture God close and protecting them on every side.
The Story: Zechariah 2 for Kids
Long ago, a prophet named Zechariah had a dream-like vision. In it, he looked up and saw a man holding a measuring line. Zechariah asked the man where he was going. The man said he was going to measure Jerusalem to see how wide and how long it was.
Then another angel came to meet the first one. The second angel ran to speak to Zechariah. The message was that Jerusalem would someday be so full of people and animals that it would spread out like villages without walls. Nobody would need a wall to keep it safe.
Why would the city need no wall? God Himself would be the protection. God said, “I will be a wall of fire around her, and I will be the glory in the middle of her.” Fire keeps enemies away, and God’s presence would be the brightest light in the city.
God also called His people to come back home. He said, “Come! Come! Flee from the land of the north.” The people had been scattered far away, like the wind blows seeds across the sky. God wanted them to come back to Zion, the city He loved.
God also spoke with joy to the city. He said, “Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion, for I come, and I will dwell within you.” Imagine the happiest song you know, and then imagine God Himself coming to live right in the middle of the city. That is the good news of this story.
Read It Together
Zechariah 2:1-2
1 I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold, a man with a measuring line in his hand. 2 Then I asked, “Where are you going?” He said to me, “To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and what is its length.”
(WEB)
Point out that Zechariah looked up and saw something surprising. Ask the children what they would want to know if they saw a man holding a measuring line. Notice how Zechariah asked a question instead of being scared.
Zechariah 2:10
Sing and rejoice, daughter of Zion; for, behold, I come, and I will dwell within you,’ says the LORD.
(WEB)
Point out the word “Sing.” God wanted the people to be happy because He was coming to live with them. Ask the children how they feel when someone they love comes to visit them.
Zechariah 2:13
Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD; for he has roused himself from his holy habitation!”
(WEB)
Point out that everyone is asked to be quiet before the Lord. Explain that being quiet helps us listen to God. Show the children how to sit still for a moment and think about God being near.
Talk About It
- What do you think it would feel like to have God as a wall of protection around you?
- Why do you think God wanted His people to come back home to Jerusalem?
- How did Zechariah respond when he saw the man with the measuring line?
- What is one way you can sing and rejoice because God is with you?
- When is a time you can be quiet and listen for God near you?
Activity Ideas
Paper Wall of Fire Craft
You will need construction paper in red, orange, and yellow, scissors, glue, and a sheet of white paper. Have the children cut out flame shapes and glue them in a row around the bottom and sides of the white paper to make a ring of fire. In the middle, they can draw or write a picture of God being close to them. Talk about how God is the glory in the middle of His people.
Measuring Line Game
You will need a long piece of string or yarn and a few chairs or cones. Stretch the string across the room and let the children take turns measuring the distance with their feet or hands. As they measure, remind them that the man in the story measured Jerusalem so God could show His love and plans for the city. Keep the game lively and fun.
Take-Home Message Card
You will need an index card, a pencil, and crayons. Have each child write or draw one thing that shows God protecting them, such as a family member, a home, or a friend. Encourage them to take the card home and show it to their family during the week. This helps the lesson stay with them after class.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows God’s care for His people after they had been scattered. God promises to protect Jerusalem and to dwell among His people. The vision also points forward to the day when many nations would join themselves to the Lord.
When teaching children, avoid overstating the fire imagery as a literal wall that appears today. Keep the focus on God’s presence and protection, and explain that the vision was given to Zechariah in a special way for the people of his time.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for being a wall of protection around us and for living right in the middle of our lives. Help us to sing and rejoice because You are near. Teach us to be quiet and listen for Your voice. Keep us safe and close to You every day. Amen.
