This page gives you a complete set of Zechariah 3 Bible study questions, with a short leader’s note for each one. It is written for a small group, a Sunday class, or a personal study who want to move from what the chapter says to what it means and how to live it. The questions follow the order of the vision, so you can work through the chapter from start to finish.

Zechariah 3 at a Glance

Zechariah sees Joshua the high priest standing before the LORD’s angel while Satan stands ready to accuse him. The LORD rebukes the accuser, and Joshua’s filthy garments are removed and replaced with clean clothing and a clean turban. The angel then gives Joshua a charge: walk in God’s ways, and you will keep his house and courts.

The chapter closes with promises about a coming servant called the Branch, a stone with seven eyes, and a day when the land’s iniquity will be removed and peace will fill the neighborhood. Keep this sequence in view as you work through the questions.

Observation Questions

Use these first to make sure everyone has the facts of the text in view before anyone starts interpreting. Keep the discussion close to what the words actually say and resist the urge to jump ahead to big conclusions.

Zechariah 3:1-2

1 He showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the LORD’s angel, and Satan standing at his right hand to be his adversary. 2 The LORD said to Satan, “The LORD rebuke you, Satan! Yes, the LORD who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Isn’t this a burning stick plucked out of the fire?”

Read these verses first to set the scene. They introduce the courtroom picture and show that the LORD himself answers the accuser, which frames everything that follows.

Zechariah 3:3-5

3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the angel. 4 He answered and spoke to those who stood before him, saying, “Take the filthy garments off him.” To him he said, “Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from you, and I will clothe you with rich clothing.” 5 I said, “Let them set a clean turban on his head.” So they set a clean turban on his head, and clothed him; and the LORD’s angel was standing by.

This passage holds the center of the vision, with filthy garments removed and a clean turban placed on Joshua’s head. Reading it aloud lets the group hear the change in each step.

Zechariah 3:6-7

6 The LORD’s angel protested to Joshua, saying, 7 “The LORD of Armies says: ‘If you will walk in my ways, and if you will follow my instructions, then you also shall judge my house, and shall also keep my courts, and I will give you a place of access among these who stand by.

Here the angel speaks directly to Joshua and sets out the conditions and the calling. Hearing the words in order helps the group see how grace and responsibility belong together.

Zechariah 3:8-9

8 Hear now, Joshua the high priest, you and your fellows who sit before you; for they are men who are a sign: for, behold, I will bring out my servant, the Branch. 9 For, behold, the stone that I have set before Joshua; on one stone are seven eyes: behold, I will engrave its engraving,’ says the LORD of Armies, ‘and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

These verses introduce the Branch and the stone with seven eyes, the two promises that look forward to what God will do. Reading them aloud builds anticipation for the chapter’s closing vision.

Zechariah 3:10

In that day,’ says the LORD of Armies, ‘you will invite every man his neighbor under the vine and under the fig tree.’”

The chapter ends with a picture of peace in which neighbors rest under their own vine and fig tree. Ending the reading here leaves the group with a hopeful image to carry into prayer.

Memory Verse for Zechariah 3

Zechariah 3:4

He answered and spoke to those who stood before him, saying, “Take the filthy garments off him.” To him he said, “Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from you, and I will clothe you with rich clothing.”

This verse holds the heart of the chapter, with God removing iniquity and providing new clothing. Memorizing it helps you recall that forgiveness comes from the LORD’s own action and includes a fresh covering.

A Closing Prayer for the Group

Father, we come before you aware of the filthy garments we sometimes carry and the accusations we hear from within and without. Thank you that you rebuke the accuser and remove iniquity by your own hand. Clothe us with what is clean, and help us walk in your ways and keep your instructions in the ordinary places of our days. Make us a sign to those around us of the work you are doing. Bring the peace of the vine and the fig tree into our homes and neighborhoods. Amen.
