This lesson teaches children that God gives every person a job to do in his house, and that every job matters. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God gives every person a special job to help worship him, and every job is important. When we serve God together, we make his house a happy place.

Memory Verse

Psalm 100:2

Serve the LORD with gladness. Come before his presence with singing.

(WEB)

Have the children stand up and wave their arms like flags while they say the verse together. Then have them sit down slowly, pretending to fold their hands in prayer. Repeat the motions two or three times until the children can say the verse without looking.

The Story: 1 Chronicles 23 for Kids

King David was now very old. He knew it was time for his son Solomon to become the next king. Before he died, David called all the leaders of Israel together. He also called the priests and the Levites, the special helpers who took care of God’s house.

David counted the Levite men who were old enough to work. There were thirty-eight thousand of them. He gave each group a job. Some would take care of the building where God’s people worshiped. Some would be judges and leaders. Some would be gatekeepers who guarded the doors. And some would sing and play music to praise the LORD.

David divided the Levites into families. Each family had its own name and its own work to do. Some men helped the priests, and some helped with the holy bread and the special offerings. Each family knew exactly where it belonged.

David said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people. He lives in Jerusalem forever.” Because God’s people now had a safe home, the Levites would not have to carry the tent and its things from place to place anymore. Instead, they could stay in the house of God and serve him there.

Every morning and every evening, the Levites stood up to thank and praise the LORD. They offered gifts to God on the Sabbath days and on the special feast days. Everyone had a job, and everyone worked together to honor God.

Read It Together

1 Chronicles 23:4-5

4 David said, “Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the LORD’s house, six thousand were officers and judges, 5 four thousand were doorkeepers, and four thousand praised the LORD with the instruments which I made for giving praise.”

(WEB)

Point out that some Levites oversaw the work of the house, some were judges, some were gatekeepers, and some praised God with music. Ask the children to notice that David gave each group its own job and that all of them were needed.

1 Chronicles 23:30

And to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise in the evening…

(WEB)

Show the children that the Levites stood each morning and evening to thank and praise the LORD. Explain that thanking God is a job anyone can do, every single day, at home or at church.

1 Chronicles 23:25-26

25 For David said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people; and he dwells in Jerusalem forever. 26 Also the Levites will no longer need to carry the tabernacle and all its vessels for its service.”

(WEB)

Tell the children that God had given his people a peaceful home in Jerusalem. Point out how the Levites were now free to serve God in one place, showing that God takes care of his people.

Talk About It

  • What job did the Levites have in God’s house, and which one would you most like to have?
  • Why do you think David gave every family a different job instead of giving everyone the same one?
  • How could you thank God in the morning or evening, the same way the Levites did?
  • What is one job you can do at home or at church to help others feel welcome?
  • How do you feel knowing that God lives with his people and takes care of them?

Activity Ideas

Paper Plate Helper Badges

You will need paper plates, markers, string or yarn, and a hole punch. Have each child draw a picture of a helpful job they could do at church, such as passing out bulletins, singing, or holding the door. Punch two holes at the top of each plate, thread the yarn through, and tie it so the badge can be worn around the neck. Let the children tell the group what their badge stands for.

Musical Gatekeepers Game

You will need a room with space to move and a few shakers or a simple drum, such as a pot and wooden spoon. Assign some children to be gatekeepers who stand by the door and guard it with a pretend key. Others can play the drum or shake a rattle while everyone else walks around in a circle. When the music stops, the gatekeepers let the others pass through the door one at a time.

Take-Home Thank-You Card

You will need paper, crayons, and an envelope for each child. Ask the children to draw one person who helps them at church or at home, and write or draw a small thank-you message. Encourage them to deliver the card that week and explain that serving others is one way to serve God. Remind them to share something they learned from the lesson with their family.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this passage shows that God organizes his worship with care and gives meaningful roles to many people, not just a few leaders. It reminds us that serving in the church is a calling from God, and that the ordinary, behind-the-scenes work of helping others matters as much as the visible work. The chapter also shows David’s desire to see God’s house well cared for, and his trust that God had brought his people to a place of rest.

Avoid overstating to children that every job in church will be easy or that serving God always brings a reward in this life. Some Levite roles involved long hours and hard work, and the text does not promise comfort. Focus instead on the joy of belonging to God’s family and doing faithful work for him.

A Prayer to Close

Dear Lord, thank you for giving each of us a job to do in your house. Help us to serve you with joy, whether we are singing, helping, or just being kind to someone. Thank you for living with your people and taking care of us every day. Help us to remember that every job we do for you matters. Amen.
