This lesson teaches children that God wants His people to be fair, honest, and kind, even when it is hard. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God loves fairness and honesty. When we treat others rightly, we show that we belong to Him, and He cares about every person, even the ones who are easy to forget.
Memory Verse
Deuteronomy 25:15
You shall have a perfect and just weight. You shall have a perfect and just measure, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

Hold your hands out in front of you, palms up, as if you are weighing something on a scale. Move your hands up and down slowly while you say the verse together. Then give each child a turn to be the scale.
The Story: Deuteronomy 25 for Kids
God gave His people a set of rules to help them live well together. If two people had an argument, they went to the judges. The judges had to listen carefully and decide who was right. The good person was called righteous, and the person who had done wrong was called wicked. Judges were never allowed to be unfair.
God also told the people about weights and measures. Shopkeepers sometimes cheated customers by using one heavy weight to buy and one light weight to sell. God said, “Do not do that.” He wanted every weight and every measure to be honest and just, so that everyone got what they paid for.
The people were also told to be kind to animals. When an ox walked around to crush grain, it could eat some of that grain as it worked. God said, “Do not muzzle the ox.” Even a working animal deserved to be treated well.
God remembered a time when the people of Amalek attacked the Israelites on their way out of Egypt. Amalek struck the weakest people at the back of the line, the ones who were tired and slow. God did not forget that cruel act. Later, God told His people that they must never forget it either.
At the end of the chapter, God reminded His people of His promise. If they lived fairly and honestly, their days would be long in the land God was giving them. God was showing them that He cares about how we treat one another.
Read It Together
Deuteronomy 25:1
If there is a controversy between men, and they come to judgment, and the judges judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.
(WEB)
Point out that judges were supposed to decide fairly between people. Ask the children what it feels like when someone is treated unfairly, and explain that God wants judges to protect the righteous.
Deuteronomy 25:4
You shall not muzzle the ox when he treads out the grain.
(WEB)
Show the children that God cares about animals too. Ask how they can be kind to the pets or animals they know, and point out that kindness is part of honoring God.
Deuteronomy 25:13-14
13 You shall not have in your bag diverse weights, one heavy and one light. 14 You shall not have in your house diverse measures, one large and one small.
(WEB)
Explain that God does not want people to cheat. Use simple words like “same” and “fair” to help children understand that honesty means treating everyone equally, whether you are buying or selling.
Talk About It
- What is one way you can be fair to a friend or sibling this week?
- Why do you think God wanted His people to use honest weights and measures?
- How would you feel if someone cheated you on something you traded or bought?
- Why did God want us to remember what Amalek did, even a long time later?
- What is one thing you could do to show kindness to an animal or a person who is weak?
Activity Ideas
Balance Scale Craft
You will need a paper plate, two paper cups, string, a hole punch, and a pencil. Punch three holes evenly around the edge of the plate and tie a string to each hole, then gather the strings at the top. Tape the cups to the other ends of the strings. Let children add small toys or coins to each side and talk about how a fair scale stays level.
Fair Share Game
You will need a bag of small snacks or pennies and two cups. Give the children a few minutes to divide the items between the cups, then check whether each cup has the same amount. Explain that God wants us to be just in the same way, giving each person an honest share.
Take-Home Kindness Chart
You will need a sheet of paper, markers, and a sticker for each child. Draw a simple chart with the days of the week across the top. Each day the child tries to act fairly or kindly, they earn a sticker. Ask them to tell a family member one fair thing they did that day before they add the sticker.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that God cares about justice in courts, in business, and in everyday relationships. It also shows His compassion for animals and for the weak. The rules were given to a specific nation at a specific time, but the heart behind them, honesty and mercy, still applies today.
Avoid suggesting that God wants children to punish others harshly or to use the strict punishments described in this chapter. Keep the focus on fairness, honesty, and kindness, and remind children that God is loving and just.
A Prayer to Close
Father, thank You for being fair and good. Help us to be honest in what we say and do. Help us to treat others kindly, even when it is hard. Remind us that You see everything and that You love us. Amen.
