In this lesson, children learn that God is a safe rock who hears us when we call and rescues us from danger. This lesson works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
When we are scared, we can call on God, and He hears us and keeps us safe like a strong rock.
Memory Verse
2 Samuel 22:3
God is my rock in whom I take refuge; my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge. My savior, you save me from violence.

Put both hands together in front of your chest, then lift them up and hold them tight like a strong rock. Say the words slowly with the motion, “God is my rock,” and hold the rock position on the last word.
The Story: 2 Samuel 22 for Kids
King David had many enemies, and some of them wanted to hurt him. King Saul, the king before him, was also chasing David, and David had to run and hide from danger many times. David knew that he could not save himself with his own strength.
One day, after God had rescued David from all of his enemies, David sat down and sang a song to God. He said, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.” David wanted everyone to know that God was the one who kept him safe. Every time David was in trouble, he called out to God.
David remembered a time when waves of trouble seemed to crash over him. He felt like he was going under, like someone drowning in deep water. In his fear, David cried out to the Lord. God heard him from His holy place, and God came to help him.
David told how God rescued him from his strong enemies, who were much too big and strong for David to fight alone. God did not leave David alone in the big danger. God brought David out into a wide, open place where he could breathe and be free again.
David said that God helps the people who love Him and walk in His ways. David was not perfect, but he tried to obey God and stay close to Him. He ended his song by saying, “I will give thanks to you, Lord, and I will sing praises to your name.”
Read It Together
2 Samuel 22:2
And he said: “The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer, even mine…
(WEB)
Point out the words “my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.” Ask the children to name a time they felt safe, and connect that safety to the way God protects us.
2 Samuel 22:7
In my distress, I called on the LORD. Yes, I called to my God. He heard my voice out of his temple. My cry came into his ears.
(WEB)
Show the children that David was scared, and he prayed to God. Explain that God heard his voice and that God hears us too when we pray.
2 Samuel 22:20
He also brought me out into a large place. He delivered me, because he delighted in me.
(WEB)
Point out that God brought David out into a large place. Explain that God rescues us and gives us room to be free and happy.
Talk About It
- What did David call God in this song, and what do you think those names mean?
- What was David scared of, and what did he do when he was scared?
- How do you think God felt when David called out to Him for help?
- Can you think of a time when you felt safe because someone was protecting you?
- What is one thing you can do this week when you feel afraid?
Activity Ideas
Rock Painting Craft
You will need a few smooth stones, washable paint or markers, and a paper towel. Let each child paint or draw a picture on one stone of something God protects them from or a word like “Rock” or “Safe.” Let the paint dry, then have each child keep the stone at home as a reminder that God is their rock.
Rock, Fortress, Deliverer Motion Game
Teach the children three simple motions: hands in a rock shape for “rock,” arms crossed in front like a wall for “fortress,” and arms reaching up for “deliverer.” Call out the words in random order and have children do the motion. Then say the memory verse together with the motions to help children remember it.
Take-Home Prayer Jar
You will need an empty jar, small slips of paper, and a pencil. Ask each child to write or draw one thing they are scared of or worried about and fold it up. Put the papers in the jar, and encourage the family to take one out each night to pray about together. Remind them that God hears every prayer.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this song of David shows that God is a faithful protector who rescues His people in distress. David looks back on many years of danger and sees God’s hand in every rescue, which invites us to trust God in the same way. The passage reminds us that deliverance comes from God, not from our own strength.
Be careful not to make children think that obeying God means they will never be in danger or never feel afraid. David faced real enemies and real suffering, and God’s protection does not always look like the absence of trouble. Focus on God’s presence and faithfulness rather than promising that bad things will never happen.
A Prayer to Close
Lord, thank You that You are our rock and our safe place. When we feel scared, help us remember that You hear us when we call. Keep us close to You every day, and help us trust You with everything we are afraid of. Amen.
