This lesson teaches children that God wants us to love Him and treat others kindly, not just go to church and say the right words. It works well for ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

Big Idea

God wants us to really love Him and be kind to others, not just show up at church and look good on the outside.

Memory Verse

Jeremiah 7:23

But this thing I commanded them, saying, ‘Listen to my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people; and walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’

(WEB)

Put one hand over your heart while you say the verse, then open both hands wide on the words “walk in all the way.” Repeat it together three times, getting a little quieter each time, until the whole class can say it with their eyes closed.

The Story: Jeremiah 7 for Kids

A long time ago, God chose a man named Jeremiah to be His messenger. God told Jeremiah to stand at the gate of the Lord’s house in Jerusalem, where many people from Judah came to worship. Jeremiah was to speak God’s words loudly so everyone could hear them.

The people had a habit of saying, “The Lord’s temple is here! The Lord’s temple is here!” They thought that because the temple stood in their city, everything was fine. But God was not pleased. He told them that saying words about Him was not enough. They had to change how they lived.

God named the wrong things they were doing. They were stealing, lying, and treating poor people, strangers, and widows unfairly. Some of them had even started worshiping false gods. God said, “Listen to my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people.” God was asking them to listen and follow Him.

But the people did not listen. Again and again God sent His prophets to speak to them, and again and again they would not turn back to Him. God felt very sad about this, and He told Jeremiah that the people would face hard times because of what they had chosen. It was a sorrowful message, and God wanted His people to understand why it mattered.

Read It Together

Jeremiah 7:3

The LORD of Armies, the God of Israel says, “Amend your ways and your doings, and I will cause you to dwell in this place.

(WEB)

Point out the word “amend,” which means to change and make things better. Ask the children what they think God wanted the people to change, and remind them that God is always ready to help us change when we ask Him.

Jeremiah 7:5-6

5 For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings, if you thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor; 6 if you don’t oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, and don’t shed innocent blood in this place, and don’t walk after other gods to your own hurt…

(WEB)

Show how God cares about how we treat others, especially people who are often left out, like strangers, orphans, and widows. Explain that being fair and kind is one of the ways we show our love for God in everyday life.

Jeremiah 7:24

But they didn’t listen or turn their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

(WEB)

Point out that the people chose to follow their own plans instead of God’s. Help the children see that we sometimes do this too, and talk about how we can ask God to help us listen when He speaks.

Talk About It

  • What is one way you can show someone kindness this week?
  • Why do you think God cares more about how we act than just what we say at church?
  • What might help you listen better when someone tells you something important?
  • How do you think the people in Jeremiah’s time felt when God asked them to change?
  • What is one thing you could do to show God you love Him at home?

Activity Ideas

Heart Collage Craft

You will need paper, crayons or markers, scissors, and glue. Have each child trace a large heart on paper and write or draw one kind thing they can do for someone else inside it. Let them decorate the outside too. Hang the hearts on the classroom wall as a reminder that God wants our hearts, not just our words.

Follow the Leader Walk

Clear some space in the room or a hallway. Choose one child to be the leader, and have everyone else follow them while they walk, hop, or stretch in simple ways. Stop the game and ask the children how it felt to follow carefully. Connect it to the verse about walking in all the way that God commands.

Kindness Jar at Home

You will need an empty jar and some slips of paper. Ask the family to write one kind act they did each day and drop it into the jar. At the end of the week, read the notes together and thank God for helping you love others. This gives children a simple way to keep the lesson going all week long.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter is a strong reminder that faith is more than religious words or routine. God looks at the whole life, including justice, mercy, and whether we truly trust and obey Him. Jeremiah’s message was not meant to crush people, but to call them back to a living relationship with the Lord.

With children, avoid making the lesson about punishment or frightening them about hard consequences. Keep the focus on God’s invitation to listen, change, and love. The most important point is that God is patient and always calls His people back to Himself.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for loving us and wanting our hearts. Help us to listen when You speak and to do what is kind and fair. Show us how to love You and love the people around us every day. Amen.
