This lesson teaches children that God gives every person in the church a special gift, and every gift matters because we all belong to one body, which is Jesus’ family. It is built for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short story, a few questions and one activity.
Big Idea
God made us all different on purpose, and every one of us has a job to do in His family. When we help each other, the whole family is stronger.
Memory Verse
1 Corinthians 12:12
For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.

Hold both hands up with your fingers spread, then link your fingers together and wiggle them. Say the verse slowly while you wiggle, and ask the children to show you how many parts of the body they can name in one breath.
The Story: 1 Corinthians 12 for Kids
Long ago, a man named Paul wrote a letter to the friends in a city called Corinth. They were church friends who loved Jesus, but they were not getting along. Some people thought their gift was better than everyone else’s, and some thought they were not important at all. Paul wanted them to understand something special about God’s family.
Paul told them that God gives different gifts to different people. Some people can teach, some can help, some can sing, and some can heal the sick. But the same Spirit of God gives all of these gifts. It is like one big team, and each player has a different spot to play.
Then Paul used a picture everyone could understand: a body. He asked, “If the foot said, ‘I am not a hand, so I do not belong to the body,’ would it stop being part of the body?” Of course not! A foot is still important, even though it is not a hand. Paul said the same is true for every part of the body of Christ.
Paul also said something surprising. Some parts of the body seem weaker, and some seem less important, but they are still needed. God cares for every part, and when one part hurts, the whole body feels it. When one part is celebrated, the whole body celebrates too.
So Paul encouraged the friends in Corinth to stop comparing themselves. He told them to care for one another and to use their gifts to help the whole church family. Everyone belongs, and everyone is needed.
Read It Together
1 Corinthians 12:4-6
4 Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord. 6 There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all.

Point out that there are many different gifts, but the same Spirit, the same Lord and the same God give them all. Ask the children to notice the word “same” and explain that God is the one who makes us a team.
1 Corinthians 12:14-18
14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot would say, “Because I’m not the hand, I’m not part of the body,” it is not therefore not part of the body. 16 If the ear would say, “Because I’m not the eye, I’m not part of the body,” it’s not therefore not part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.

Read this slowly and let the children laugh a little at the idea of a foot or ear feeling left out. Show that God placed each part exactly where He wanted it, which means no one is an accident in His family.
1 Corinthians 12:25-26
25 That there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. Or when one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

Explain that when one person in the church is sad, we should care, and when someone is happy, we should celebrate with them. Ask the children to think of one friend they could cheer up this week.
Talk About It
- What is a gift or talent that you think God has given you?
- Why do you think God made every person in His family different from one another?
- How would your class or church feel if one part of the body was missing, like a hand or an eye?
- What can you do when a friend feels left out or thinks they are not important?
- How can you use your gift this week to help someone else in your family or church?
Activity Ideas
Body Parts Collage
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and scissors. Ask each child to draw a simple outline of a person, then label a part of the body that matters to them, such as hands, eyes, or feet. Have them write one gift they have next to that part. Hang the finished pictures together to show that the whole family is made of many parts.
Human Knot Game
You will need a small group of children, standing in a circle. Have everyone reach in and hold two different hands across the circle, then work together to untangle without letting go. It shows how each person’s movement helps the whole group. Talk about how teamwork in the church works in a similar way.
Take-Home Gift Card
You will need index cards, a pencil and a small envelope for each child. Ask the children to write one gift they see in a family member and draw a small heart on it. Let them take the card home and give it to that person, reminding everyone that God made each of us with a purpose.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter teaches that the Holy Spirit gives a variety of gifts to believers for the common good of the church, and that no gift is unimportant or unnecessary. Paul uses the picture of the human body to show that unity does not mean sameness, and that honoring and caring for one another is part of living as Christ’s body.
With children, avoid overstating the specific list of spiritual gifts or suggesting that a child must have a dramatic ability to matter. Focus on the simple truth that everyone belongs and everyone is needed, so children do not walk away feeling they must perform to be valued by God.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank You for making us all different and for placing each of us in Your family. Help us use our gifts to care for one another, and help us remember that every part of the body matters. Show us how to cheer for our friends and to help when someone is hurting. Amen.
