In this lesson, children learn that God hears and answers prayer, because He keeps His promises and lives among His people. This lesson is for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God is faithful and keeps His promises, and He always listens when we pray to Him, wherever we are.

Memory Verse

2 Chronicles 6:14

And he said, “The LORD, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven or on earth; you who keep covenant and loving kindness with your servants who walk before you with all their heart…

Have the children stand tall with their arms stretched wide, like a person praying with open hands. Then they can say the verse together while keeping their arms out, and sit down slowly when they reach the end.

The Story: 2 Chronicles 6 for Kids

King Solomon was the son of King David, and he had a big job to do. His father David had wanted to build a house for God, a special temple in the city of Jerusalem. God had told David that his son would be the one to build it. Now that job belonged to Solomon.

When the temple was finished, all the people of Israel gathered together to see it. Solomon stood up in front of everyone and made a special kind of prayer. He lifted his hands toward heaven and thanked God for keeping every promise He had made to David.

Solomon knew that God is too great for any building to hold. He said, “Will God really live on the earth with people? Even the heavens cannot hold you, so how much less this house I have built!” Solomon was humble before God, and he remembered that God is bigger than anything people can make.

Then Solomon asked God for something important. He asked God to listen whenever the people prayed in this place. He prayed for people who were sad, for people who had done wrong, and even for people from faraway lands who came to pray. Solomon wanted everyone to know that God hears them.

At the end of his prayer, Solomon asked God to be near His people and to remember His love for David. The people listened and agreed with their king. It was a day when everyone remembered that God keeps His word.

Read It Together

2 Chronicles 6:18

“But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens can’t contain you; how much less this house which I have built!

(WEB)

Point out that Solomon was amazed God would live with people at all. Explain that the temple could never be big enough to hold God, but God still chose to be close to His people. Ask the children what it means that God is bigger than any building.

2 Chronicles 6:21

Listen to the petitions of your servant, and of your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Yes, hear from your dwelling place, even from heaven; and when you hear, forgive.

(WEB)

Show the children how Solomon asked God to listen to the prayers of His people. Point out the words “hear from your dwelling place” and remind them that God is always listening, even from heaven. Talk about how it feels to know someone is really listening to you.

2 Chronicles 6:42

“The LORD God, don’t turn away the face of your anointed. Remember your loving kindnesses to David your servant.”

(WEB)

Explain that Solomon asked God to remember His loving kindness to David. Help the children see that God remembers His promises and His love for His people. Let them share one way they have seen God be faithful.

Talk About It

  • What did King Solomon do when the temple was finished?
  • Why do you think Solomon said that God is too big for any building?
  • Who did Solomon pray for, and why do you think he included them?
  • How do you know that God hears you when you pray?
  • What is one promise of God that you are glad He keeps?

Activity Ideas

Paper Plate Temple Drawing

You will need a paper plate, crayons or markers, and glue with some scraps of colored paper. Have each child draw a simple temple or house on the plate, then add windows and a door. As they work, talk about how God is bigger than any building and still hears every prayer. Let them glue on a small paper heart to show that God listens to them.

Hands Up Prayer Game

Gather the children in a circle and have them practice lifting their hands toward heaven, just as Solomon did. Call out a simple prayer need like “a sick friend” or “a hard day at school,” and the children lift their hands and whisper a quiet prayer. Keep the game short and cheerful so children stay engaged.

Prayer Promise Card

You will need an index card, a pencil, and a marker. Have each child write or draw one thing they want to pray about this week on one side of the card. On the other side, they can draw a small picture of God listening. Encourage them to take the card home and look at it each day as a reminder that God hears them.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this chapter shows Solomon acknowledging that God is not limited to a building, while still honoring the place set apart for worship. It highlights that God’s covenant faithfulness and His attentiveness to prayer are constant, whether His people are in the land, in exile, or among foreigners. The prayer as a whole points toward the need for humble, sincere prayer from everyone.

Avoid telling children that God will always give them exactly what they ask for. The passage speaks of God hearing and forgiving, and of His faithfulness to His promises, not of guaranteed outcomes. Keep the focus on God’s character and His nearness, rather than on getting specific answers.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, we thank You that You are bigger than any house and still You listen to us. Help us to pray to You every day, and to remember that You keep Your promises. Thank You for always hearing us and loving us. Amen.
