This lesson teaches children that God gives every person in the church a special gift, and every gift matters because we all belong to one body with Jesus. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God made every one of us different on purpose, and every person in God’s family is needed. No one is too small or too unimportant to help the whole church.

Memory Verse

1 Corinthians 12:27

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

Hold both hands up with your fingers spread wide, then wiggle them together like a team. Say the verse as you move your hands, and let each finger stand for one person who belongs to Jesus’ body.

The Story: 1 Corinthians 12 for Kids

Long ago, Paul wrote a letter to the friends in the church at Corinth. Some of them had come from worshiping statues that could not see, hear, or speak. Now they belonged to the true God, and Paul wanted them to know something important about the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit gives different gifts to different people. One person might be good at teaching, another at helping the sick, another at speaking in different languages, and another at doing kind things quietly. Paul said the same Spirit gives all these gifts, and the same Lord is served through them all.

Then Paul told a picture story about a body. He said, “If the foot says, ‘I am not a hand, so I am not part of the body,’ it is still part of the body.” A foot does not stop being important just because it is not a hand. Every part has a job to do.

Paul also said that if the body were only one part, it could not work at all. An eye needs an ear, a hand needs a foot, and the whole body needs every part. In the same way, God set each person in the church exactly where he wanted them.

Paul then said that when one part of the body hurts, the whole body feels it. When one part is honored, everyone is glad. Christians are supposed to care for one another like that. Paul ended by telling them to want the best gifts, and he said he would show them an even better way, which is love.

Read It Together

1 Corinthians 12:4-6

4 Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord. 6 There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all.

Point out that there are many gifts, but the same Spirit, the same Lord, and the same God is behind them all. Ask the children to notice that the word “same” shows up three times, which shows that God is one and works together.

1 Corinthians 12:14-18

14 For the body is not one member, but many. 15 If the foot would say, “Because I’m not the hand, I’m not part of the body,” it is not therefore not part of the body. 16 If the ear would say, “Because I’m not the eye, I’m not part of the body,” it’s not therefore not part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.

(WEB)

Show the children a hand and a foot and ask them to name a job each one does. Explain that God put each part in the body on purpose, just as he wanted, so nothing in the body is unnecessary.

1 Corinthians 12:25-26

25 That there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. Or when one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

(WEB)

Point out that the body is meant to care for itself, so when one part is hurt, the others feel it too. Talk about how the church family should notice when someone is sad or sick and help them.

Talk About It

  • What is one thing you are good at that you could use to help someone at church or at home?
  • What did Paul say about the feet and the hands, and why does that matter for how we treat each other?
  • How can you show that you care when a friend in your class is feeling hurt or left out?
  • Why do you think God gives different gifts to different people instead of making everyone the same?
  • What is one way you can help the whole church family feel like they belong together?

Activity Ideas

Paper Body Collage

Give each child a sheet of paper and some crayons or markers. Ask them to draw one part of a body, such as a hand, eye, ear, or foot, and write one thing that part helps the body do. Tape all the drawings together on a wall to make one big body that shows many parts working as one.

Team Gift Relay

Divide the children into small teams and give each team a basket of household items like a spoon, a sock, a pencil, and a cup. Each child takes a turn carrying one item to a finish line, and the team passes the basket along until everything is delivered. Afterward, say that every item and every runner was needed to finish the job.

Gift Reminder Card

Give each child an index card or a small piece of cardstock. Have them write or draw one gift they think God has given them, then tape it to the fridge or their bedroom door. Let them take the card home as a reminder that they are part of God’s body and that their gift matters.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this passage shows that the Holy Spirit gives gifts to every believer for the good of the whole church, not for personal status. Paul’s body picture teaches that unity does not mean sameness, and that every member, including those who seem less visible, is necessary and deserves honor and care.

With children, avoid implying that a child’s worth depends on being gifted or useful, since Paul’s point is that God values every member already. Also avoid suggesting that a specific spiritual gift must appear in every child, because the passage says the Spirit distributes gifts as he chooses.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank you for making each of us different and for giving every one of us a special gift. Help us to use our gifts to care for each other, and help us to remember that we are all part of your family. Help us to love our church friends like parts of one body. Amen.
