This lesson teaches children that God is light, and that when we tell God our wrongs, He forgives us and keeps us close. It suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.
Big Idea
God is light, so He is always good and true. When we tell Him what we did wrong, He forgives us and makes us clean inside.
Memory Verse
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Teach the children to cup both hands together, then slowly open them like a flower as they say the verse. Then have them tap their chest twice to show that God cleans our hearts. Repeat it together three times, getting a little softer each time.
The Story: 1 John 1 for Kids
A man named John wrote a letter to friends who loved Jesus. John had walked with Jesus for years. He had seen Jesus with his own eyes and had touched Him with his own hands. John wanted everyone to know that Jesus is the Word of life, the Son of God who came to earth.
John wrote something very important in his letter. He said, “God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” Light is bright and shows us where we are going. Darkness hides things and makes us feel lost. God is always full of light, and nothing bad is hidden in Him.
John also knew that people sometimes do wrong things. He wrote that if anyone said they never sinned, they were fooling themselves. Everyone has done something wrong at some time. John did not want his friends to feel afraid or ashamed about this.
So John gave them good news. He said that when we tell God our sins, He is faithful and fair. He will forgive us and make us clean again. Jesus’ blood washes away our wrongs. God does not leave us in the dark. He invites us to walk in His light.
John wanted his friends to walk in the light together. Walking in the light means being honest with God and with each other. When we are honest, we stay close as friends, and God’s love fills our hearts.
Read It Together
1 John 1:5
This is the message which we have heard from him and announce to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
(WEB)
Point out the words “God is light.” Ask the children what light does in a dark room. Explain that God is always bright and good, and that there is no darkness of any kind in Him.
1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.
(WEB)
Show the children how walking in the light means living openly and honestly. Point out that this verse says we have fellowship with one another, which means we can be close friends when we live in the light together.
1 John 1:8
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
(WEB)
Help the children see that everyone does wrong sometimes, including grown-ups. Stress that the verse is not saying we should feel bad forever, but that pretending we never sin is not the truth.
Talk About It
- What did John tell his friends about God being like light?
- Why do you think it is hard to tell someone when you have done something wrong?
- How do you feel when you know God has forgiven you?
- What is one way we can walk in the light with our family or friends this week?
- What makes you feel safe when you are telling God about a mistake you made?
Activity Ideas
Light the Way Drawing
Give each child a sheet of black construction paper, some yellow and white crayons or chalk, and a pencil. Ask them to draw a picture of something they can see when there is light, like a sunny field or a friend’s smile. Talk together about how God’s light lets us see clearly and feel safe.
Flashlight Freeze Game
Turn off the lights in the room or dim them as much as you can. Give each child a flashlight and let them shine it around while they move. Call out “Freeze,” and have everyone stop and point their light at a friend. Remind them that God’s light shows us where we are and that we never need to hide from Him.
Clean Heart Card
Give each child an index card and a crayon. Have them draw a heart and color it bright. Explain that when we tell God our wrongs, He makes our hearts clean. Let them take the card home and place it on the kitchen table or near their bed to remind them to talk to God each day.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this passage teaches that God’s character is pure light, and that honest confession leads to fellowship with God and with other believers. John wrote to a community that had seen Jesus and wanted to live in truth. The passage also reminds us that claiming to be sinless is self-deception, while confessing sin brings forgiveness through Jesus’ blood.
When teaching children, avoid overstating how their wrongs will feel or how often they must confess. Children may start to think they must be perfect or feel constant guilt. Instead, focus on God’s faithfulness and His desire to forgive and welcome them back into the light.
A Prayer to Close
Father, thank You that You are light and there is no darkness in You. Help us to be honest with You when we do wrong. Thank You for forgiving us and making our hearts clean. Help us walk in Your light together as friends. Amen.
