This lesson teaches children that God is light and that when we love each other, we walk in His light. It is for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including a short activity.
Big Idea
God is light, and when we love our friends and family, we are living in His light. Love shows that we belong to Him.
Memory Verse
1 John 2:10
He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him.
(WEB)
Hold both of your hands up, palms facing out, like you are holding a lantern. Lift them up high as you say the verse together, then bring them down slowly to your heart to show love. Repeat it three times, getting a little quieter each time.
The Story: 1 John 2 for Kids
A man named John wrote a letter to the children and friends in his church. He loved them very much, and he wanted them to know how to live close to God. He wrote, “My little children, I write these things so that you may not sin.”
John told them that Jesus is their helper. If anyone does something wrong, Jesus speaks up for them to the Father. Jesus is good and kind, and He gave His life so that people could be forgiven. His love is not only for the people in that church but for the whole world.
John also said that we know we belong to God when we keep His commands. Then he gave a very simple command. He told them to love one another. He said that someone who loves a brother is living in the light, and someone who hates a brother is living in the dark.
John reminded them that the world has many things that pull people away from God, like wanting things just for ourselves. He said that those things will pass away, but those who do what God wants will live forever. He encouraged them to stay close to Jesus and stay true to what they had heard from the beginning.
In the end, John told the children that God had given them a special help, His Spirit, so they would know the truth. He wanted them to remain in Jesus, so they could be full of confidence and not be ashamed when Jesus comes back.
Read It Together
1 John 2:1
My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.
(WEB)
Point out that John calls them “my little children” and says he writes so they will not sin. Show that even when we do something wrong, Jesus is there to help us, and we can talk to Him about it.
1 John 2:9-11
9 He who says he is in the light and hates his brother, is in the darkness even until now. 10 He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and doesn’t know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
(WEB)
Show how these verses connect light with love and darkness with hate. Ask the children to think of one simple way they can show love to someone in their home or class this week.
1 John 2:15-17
15 Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s. 17 The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever.
(WEB)
Explain that the world’s things will not last, but doing God’s will lasts forever. Help the children see that love for God matters more than the things we want for ourselves.
Talk About It
- What is one way we can show love to someone who is hard to love?
- Why do you think John said that loving our brothers helps us stay in the light?
- What can we do when we make a mistake and need Jesus to help us?
- How does it feel to know that Jesus is always speaking up for us?
- What is one thing you can do this week to stay close to God?
Activity Ideas
Paper Lantern Craft
You will need a paper plate, markers, a craft stick, and tape. Have each child draw a bright light or a sun in the middle of the plate, then write the word “love” around the edge. Tape the craft stick to the back so they can hold it up like a lantern while you talk about walking in the light.
Light and Dark Freeze Game
Turn off the lights in the room for a moment, then turn them back on. When the lights are on, the children walk around like they are living in God’s light, showing kindness to each other. When you say “freeze,” they stop and say one loving thing to the person nearest them. Play for about five minutes.
Love Notes to Take Home
You will need small sticky notes or strips of paper and a pencil. Have each child write one way they plan to show love this week and stick it on the fridge or on a bedroom mirror. This helps the lesson stay with them at home.
Teacher Notes
For adults, this chapter shows that knowing God is more than saying the right words. John links love for others with living in the light of God, and he says that a life of loving obedience reflects a real relationship with Him. He also points to Jesus as the one who forgives and advocates for believers, which gives both comfort and a call to holiness.
With children, avoid overstating the warnings about the world or the antichrist. Keep the focus on the simple truths of God’s love, Jesus’ help when we sin, and the call to love one another, since that is the heart of what John wants young readers to remember.
A Prayer to Close
Lord Jesus, thank You for being our helper when we do wrong. Thank You for loving us and the whole world. Help us to love our friends and family, and help us to walk in Your light every day. Amen.
