In this lesson, children learn that God wants us to pray for everyone, including leaders, neighbors, and people we may not know. This lesson is for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach.

Big Idea

God loves everyone, so we pray for everyone, even people who are hard to like or far away from us.

Memory Verse

1 Timothy 2:1

I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men…

(WEB)

Put your hands together like you are praying. Then, on the words “for all people,” open your arms wide and stretch them out as far as they will go. Say the verse together three times, getting bigger with your arms each time.

The Story: 1 Timothy 2 for Kids

A man named Paul wrote a letter to his friend Timothy, who was taking care of a church. Paul wanted Timothy to remind the people there about something very important. He said that when they gathered together, they should pray for lots of people. They should pray for kings and leaders, and they should pray for everyone around them.

Why should they pray for people who are in charge? Paul explained that God is pleased when we pray this way. God wants everyone to know Him and to find out the truth about Him. Paul said there is one God and one Jesus who helps people come close to God. Jesus gave His own life so that people could be set free.

Paul also told the church how to pray. He said they should lift up their hands and pray with a peaceful heart, not with anger or doubt. He wanted their prayers to be calm and trusting. Paul also talked about how people should dress and act in a way that shows they love God, showing kindness and doing good things for others.

Some parts of this letter are harder to understand, and grown-ups study them carefully. But the main message is clear. God cares about everyone, and He wants us to care about everyone too. When we pray for others, we show that we love them.

1 Timothy 2:8

I desire therefore that the men in every place pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and doubting.

Talk About It

  • Who is one person you could pray for this week, and what would you ask God to do for them?
  • Why do you think God wants everyone to know about Him?
  • What makes it easier or harder for you to pray for someone who makes you upset?
  • How can you show someone you care about them even when you are not praying out loud?
  • What is one thing you learned about Jesus from today’s lesson?

Activity Ideas

Hands Prayer Drawing

You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to trace one of their hands on the paper. Inside the outline, have them draw or write the names of people they want to pray for. Let them color their hand picture and take it home to remind them to pray each day.

Prayer Circle Game

You will need a small ball or a soft toy. Have children sit in a circle. When a child holds the ball, they say the name of someone they want to pray for, then pass the ball to the next person. Continue until everyone has had a turn. End by praying together for all the names shared, thanking God that He loves every person.

Prayer Reminder Jar

You will need a jar, paper slips, and a marker. Have children write or draw one person they want to pray for on each slip and place it in the jar. Encourage them to pull out one slip each day at home and pray for that person. Let them decorate the jar to make it special.

Teacher Notes

For adults, this passage shows that prayer is a responsibility for every believer, including praying for leaders and for those we find difficult. Paul ties prayer to God’s desire that all people be saved and come to know the truth. Jesus is presented as the one mediator between God and humanity, which points to the centrality of Christ in Christian faith.

When teaching children, avoid overstating the complex teachings about roles in the church or the specific instructions about dress and conduct, as these are difficult for young learners to understand and can lead to confusion. Keep the focus on praying for others and trusting that God loves everyone.

A Prayer to Close

Dear God, thank You for loving every person in the world. Help us to pray for our families, our friends, our leaders, and even people we do not know. Teach us to pray with calm and peaceful hearts. We trust that You hear every prayer we pray. Amen.
