This lesson teaches children that God helped King David win every battle he fought, and that David always gave God the credit and the honor. It works well for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
Big Idea
God is faithful, and He helped David win because David trusted Him. Every good thing we have comes from God’s hand.
Memory Verse
2 Samuel 8:14
He put garrisons in Edom. Throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all the Edomites became servants to David. The LORD gave victory to David wherever he went.
(WEB)
Have the children stand up tall with arms out wide, like a king on a hill. Then they should lift their hands high to the sky each time they say “The LORD gave victory to David wherever he went.”
The Story: 2 Samuel 8 for Kids
A long time ago, there was a king named David. He had many enemies around his kingdom, and they often came to fight him. But David did not fight alone. He trusted God to be his strong helper, and God kept His promises to him.
One day, David went out and defeated the Philistines. He took a very important city from them. Then he won battles against the Moabites, the Syrians, and the people of Zobah. Some of these enemies became servants to David and brought him gifts. David did not boast about his wins. He knew they were a gift from God.
Next, a king named Toi heard about David’s victories. Toi was happy that David had beaten his enemy, so he sent his son Joram to greet David and bless him. Joram brought beautiful gold, silver, and bronze dishes as a present. David did not keep them for himself. He gave them to the LORD.
David even won a big battle in the Valley of Salt, and he put soldiers in the land of Edom to keep the peace. Everywhere David went, God gave him the victory. David was a fair and kind king, and he made sure his people were treated with justice and goodness.
David also had helpers who worked hard for him. Joab led the army, and the priests Zadok and Ahimelech served God in the temple. David knew he could not do everything alone, so he thanked God and the people who helped him.
Read It Together
2 Samuel 8:6
Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought tribute. The LORD gave victory to David wherever he went.
(WEB)
Point out that the LORD gave David victory wherever he went. Ask the children to notice that David did not win by his own strength alone, and that God was with him in each place he traveled.
2 Samuel 8:11
King David also dedicated these to the LORD, with the silver and gold that he dedicated of all the nations which he subdued…
(WEB)
Show the children that David gave the silver and gold to the LORD. Explain that David wanted to thank God for helping him, and that giving back to God is a way of saying thank you.
2 Samuel 8:15
David reigned over all Israel; and David executed justice and righteousness for all his people.
(WEB)
Point out that David ruled with justice and righteousness. Explain that a good leader treats people fairly and does what is right, just as God does.
Talk About It
- What do you think David felt when God helped him win every battle?
- Why do you think David gave the gold and silver to God instead of keeping it?
- How can you thank God for the good things He gives you each day?
- What is one way you can show fairness to your friends, like David did for his people?
- When you feel scared or unsure, how can you remember that God is always with you?
Activity Ideas
Crown of Thanks Craft
You will need paper strips, markers, glue, and tape. Let each child decorate a paper strip with words or pictures of things they are thankful to God for. Tape the ends together to make a crown that fits their head. Explain that David thanked God for his victories, and the children can thank God for the good things in their lives too.
Victory March Game
You will need an open space and a few pieces of paper or stickers for prizes. Have the children march around the room like soldiers, then stop and cheer when you say “The LORD gave victory!” Hand out a small sticker or paper star each time they cheer. Remind them that God helps us win the hard things we face, not by our own power but by trusting Him.
Take-Home Thank You Card
You will need a sheet of paper, crayons, and an envelope for each child. Ask each child to draw a picture of something God has given them and write or draw a thank you note. Encourage them to share the card with a family member at home. Explain that just as David gave thanks to the LORD, we can share our thankfulness with the people we love.
Teacher Notes
This chapter shows that God’s faithfulness stands behind every victory. David’s success came from the LORD, and David knew it, so he gave back what he had gained. For adults, the passage invites us to see our own blessings as gifts from God and to lead others with fairness and justice.
When teaching children, avoid making it sound like God guarantees that trusting Him always leads to winning in every area of life. Speak instead of God’s steady presence and faithfulness, and help children understand that we trust Him even when things do not turn out as we hope.
A Prayer to Close
Dear God, thank you for always being with us and helping us. Help us to remember that every good thing comes from you. Teach us to be thankful and fair like King David, and to give you the honor. Amen.
