This lesson teaches children that Jesus is alive forever and is in charge of everything, even when things look scary. It is designed for children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes to teach. Little ones can learn the big idea with pictures, a simple memory verse, and a little movement.
Big Idea
Jesus is alive forever, and He is in charge of everything. We never have to be afraid of the future because He holds it in His hands.
Memory Verse
Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
(WEB)
Hold both hands up with your palms facing out, then slowly wave them back and forth like you are saying “hello” to the whole room. As you do it, say the words “Alpha and Omega, the Almighty” together, and point up to the ceiling on the word “Almighty” to show that God is above everything.
The Story: Revelation 1 for Kids
A man named John was living on a small island called Patmos. He was a friend of Jesus, and he had been sent there because he told people about Jesus. John was a long way from his church, and he missed his friends very much.
One day, on a day set aside for worship, John heard a loud voice behind him, like a trumpet. He turned around and saw seven golden lamp stands, which are lights that stand on tall poles. Among them stood someone who looked like a man, wearing a long robe with a golden belt. His face was shining like the bright sun, and his eyes were like fire.
John was so scared that he fell down as if he were dead. But the man touched him with his right hand and said, “Don’t be afraid.” Then the man said, “I am the First and the Last. I was dead, but look, I am alive forever and ever.”
The man told John to write down everything he saw. He explained that the seven stars were angels and the seven lamp stands were seven churches. Jesus wanted His friends in those churches to hear His message.
So John wrote it all down so the churches could read it. Jesus was reminding them that He was still with them, even though they could not see Him in the same way.
Read It Together
Revelation 1:17-18
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me, saying, “Don’t be afraid. I am the first and the last, 18 and the Living one. I was dead, and behold, I am alive forever and ever. Amen. I have the keys of Death and of Hades.
(WEB)
Point out that John was afraid, and Jesus gently told him not to be. Ask the children what makes them feel scared, and remind them that Jesus says the same words to us today.
Revelation 1:5-6
5 And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us, and washed us from our sins by his blood; 6 and he made us to be a Kingdom, priests to his God and Father; to him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
(WEB)
Show the children how Jesus is described as the one who loves us and washed us clean from our sins. Explain that this means we belong to Him and are part of His family.
Revelation 1:3
Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and keep the things that are written in it, for the time is at hand.
(WEB)
Point out that God wants us to read His words and keep them in our hearts. Explain that reading the Bible is a special way we can listen to God.
Talk About It
- What did John feel when he first saw Jesus, and what did Jesus say to help him?
- What are some things that make you feel scared sometimes?
- How does it help you to know that Jesus is alive forever?
- Why do you think God wanted John to write everything down for the churches?
- What is one way you can show Jesus that you trust Him this week?
Activity Ideas
Draw Your Own Lamp Stand
You will need paper, crayons or markers, and a pencil. Ask each child to draw seven small lights on a tall stand, then color the lights gold or yellow. Talk about how Jesus stands among His churches like a light that never goes out. Let the children hang their pictures in a window or on the fridge.
Alpha and Omega Game
You will need a small open space and a volunteer to be the leader. Have the leader call out “Alpha” and everyone stands still with hands at their sides, then call out “Omega” and everyone raises their hands high. Mix the words up quickly so children must listen carefully. Explain that Jesus is the first and last, so He is always there at the beginning and at the end.
Take-Home Promise Card
You will need an index card, a pen, and a clear sticker or tape. Have each child write “Jesus is alive forever” on one side and draw a small heart on the other. Encourage them to put the card in their pocket, backpack, or by their bed. Suggest that when they feel scared during the week, they can pull it out and say the words aloud.
Teacher Notes
For adults, Revelation 1 is an opening vision that introduces Jesus in His glory and power, speaking to churches facing hardship and pressure. The chapter assures believers that the risen Christ is present with His people and holds authority over history, death, and the unseen world. It reads as encouragement to endure faithfully, not a timeline of future events.
With children, avoid overstating the symbolism of the seven stars, lamp stands, and the detailed imagery of Jesus’s appearance. Keep the focus on the simple truths that Jesus is alive, is with His people, and tells us not to be afraid.
A Prayer to Close
Jesus, we thank You that You are alive forever and You are in charge of everything. Help us not to be afraid when things feel scary, because You are always with us. Thank You for loving us and making us part of Your family. Help us to listen to You and to trust You every day. Amen.
