In this lesson, children learn that Paul kept trusting God and finishing his work even when life was hard, so they can too. This lesson suits children ages 5 to 11 and takes about 20 to 30 minutes, including the story, the Bible reading, and the activity.
Big Idea
God helps us keep doing the right thing all the way to the end, even when it is hard, lonely, or scary. We never have to be strong on our own, because the Lord is always with us.
Memory Verse
2 Timothy 4:7
I have fought the good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith.
(WEB)
Teach the children to hold up one hand, then slowly count off three fingers as they say the words: fight, finish, keep. Then have them place a hand on their heart, which helps them remember the faith they hold onto.
The Story: 2 Timothy 4 for Kids
Paul was an old man, and he was sitting in a dark prison cell. He knew that his time on earth was almost over. He wrote a letter to his young friend Timothy, who was like a son to him.
Paul wanted Timothy to be brave. He told him, “Preach the word. Be ready, whether it is a good day or a hard day.” Paul knew that people would not always want to hear the truth, so he asked Timothy to stay faithful and patient.
Paul had many friends, but some had left him. Demas loved the things of this world more than God, so he went away. Paul was lonely, but he asked Timothy to bring Mark to him, because Mark could help with the work. Luke was still with him, and that made Paul glad.
Paul asked Timothy to bring him a cloak to keep him warm and some books and parchments to read and write. Paul was still caring about small things, and he was still thinking about the people who needed God’s love.
Even when he was alone, Paul was not afraid. He said that the Lord stood by him and gave him strength, so the good news could be told to many people. Paul said that the Lord would rescue him from every evil and keep him safe for heaven.
At the end of his letter, Paul sent greetings to his friends, one by one. He wanted everyone to know that they were loved, and he ended with a prayer that God’s grace would be with them.
Read It Together
2 Timothy 4:2
Preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with all patience and teaching.
(WEB)
Point out that Paul told Timothy to keep telling the truth about God, whether it was an easy time or a hard time. Ask the children what they can say about Jesus to their friends.
2 Timothy 4:17
But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the message might be fully proclaimed, and that all the Gentiles might hear; and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
(WEB)
Point out that even when Paul felt alone, the Lord stood by him and made him strong. Help the children see that God is with them too, even when no one else is around.
2 Timothy 4:18
And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me for his heavenly Kingdom; to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
(WEB)
Point out that Paul trusted the Lord to rescue him from every evil thing. Explain that God keeps His children safe in His own way and His own time.
Talk About It
- What did Paul ask Timothy to do even when people did not want to listen?
- How do you think Paul felt when his friends left him alone in prison?
- Who helped Paul when he was lonely, and who did he ask to come be with him?
- What is one hard thing you could keep doing even when it feels too tough?
- How do you know that God is still with you when you feel scared or alone?
Activity Ideas
Finish Line Crown Craft
You will need paper, crayons, scissors, and tape. Cut a strip of paper long enough to fit each child’s head, then have them decorate it with bright colors and sparkly stickers. Write “The Crown of Righteousness” on the front, then tape the ends together. Explain that Paul knew God had a crown waiting for him at the finish.
Fight the Good Fight Relay
Set up a simple course with cones, chairs, or pillows that the children must go around or over. Have them run the course one at a time while the others cheer them on. Say that finishing a race is like finishing faithfully, and every child can keep going with encouragement from friends.
Faithful Friend Card
Give each child a piece of folded paper and some markers. Ask them to draw a picture of someone who encourages them and write one kind sentence on the inside. They can take the card home to give to a family member, reminding them that friends and family help us keep going.
Teacher Notes
For adults, 2 Timothy 4 is Paul’s farewell letter, written from prison near the end of his life. It shows a faithful servant of God who was honest about loneliness and hardship, yet still trusted the Lord to rescue him and bring him home. It calls every believer to keep preaching, serving, and remaining faithful whatever the cost.
Avoid telling children that doing the right thing will always make life easy or that God will always keep bad things from happening. Paul faced real suffering and even death, so be honest that following Jesus can be hard, while focusing on the Lord’s presence and faithfulness.
A Prayer to Close
Dear Lord, thank You for being with us every day, even when things are hard. Help us keep trying to do what is right and to finish strong, just like Paul did. Thank You for always standing by us and keeping us safe. Amen.
