This prayer is for the people who live closest to you: the family across the fence, the couple down the hall, the older man who waves from his porch. You can pray it in the morning as you step outside, in the evening when you see their lights come on, or whenever a neighbor crosses your mind. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak to God in your own words about the households around you.
Prayers for My Neighbors
Father, thank You for the people who share this street with me. I do not know every story behind their front doors, but You know them completely. I ask You to watch over the families nearby. Give them peace in their homes, steady provision for their work and bills, and wisdom for the decisions they face. Where there is grief, sickness or a quiet loneliness that no one sees, come close and comfort them. Where there is strain between neighbors, soften hearts on every side, including mine.
Lord, make me a good neighbor. Help me notice when someone is struggling and give me the courage to ask how they are doing. Let my kindness be practical: a casserole when there is a loss, a hand with a heavy box, a word of encouragement when someone is discouraged. Keep me from gossip and from judging people I only see from a distance. Let the way I treat them reflect the way You have treated me. Bless the children playing in the yards, the teenagers walking home, and the elderly who may need a little more care than they ask for. Let this street be a place where people feel known and safe. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I bring my neighbors before You now. Bless the homes around me and the people inside them. Give them rest, health and provision, and meet the needs I know about and the ones I do not. Help me love them with patience and generosity, and let them see Your kindness through me this week. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Mark 12:31
The second is like this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
(WEB)
Jesus gives this command after naming the greatest commandment. As you pray, ask God to make love for your neighbor concrete in your daily choices, the small acts that show you take their wellbeing seriously.
Romans 12:15
Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.
(WEB)
Paul calls believers to share in both joy and sorrow. Pray that you would be quick to celebrate with neighbors who have good news and present when they are hurting.
Philippians 2:4
Each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.
(WEB)
This verse asks us to look beyond our own concerns. Pray that God would turn your attention outward, so you notice what your neighbors need and not only what you want.
Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
(WEB)
Paul speaks of carrying one another’s burdens. Pray for the strength and humility to help a neighbor bear a load that is too heavy for them alone.
Psalm 127:1
Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.
(WEB)
This psalm reminds us that every home depends on the Lord. Pray that the households near you would be built and protected by God, not merely by their own effort.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray for their neighbors while they walk the street, take out the trash, or water the garden in the early morning or at dusk. Let your hands do something ordinary as you pray, since that often keeps the prayer from becoming hurried. You might keep a short list on your phone of neighbors by name or by house, and pray through it once a week.
You can also invite others to pray with you. A spouse, a roommate, a small group from church, or a friend in the same neighborhood can take up this prayer for the same street. When you learn something specific about a neighbor, such as a surgery, a new job or a loss, come back to this prayer and add that concern in your own words.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord watch over every home on your street and every person who lives in them. May He give your neighbors peace in their going out and their coming in. May He make you a source of kindness to them, and may they find in you a friend they can trust.
