These prayers are written for an expectant mother, whether you are the mother yourself, a partner, a friend, a grandparent, or someone who loves her from a distance. Pray them during pregnancy, before a scan or appointment, in the quiet hours of the night when worry tends to rise, or on the morning of labor. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for an Expectant Mother

Lord, you knew this child before the first day of their life, and you have known this mother long before this season began. Thank you for the life growing in her body. Be close to her in the tiredness, the nausea, the restless sleep, and the questions that come at two in the morning. Calm the fears she has not yet spoken aloud, about the baby’s health, about labor, about whether she will be enough for this little one. Give her steady rest in your presence, and remind her that her body is working as you designed it to work.

Father, I ask for the baby’s safety and healthy development, and for wisdom for the doctors, midwives, and nurses who will care for them both. Protect mother and child from harm seen and unseen. Go before them into every appointment, every scan, and every decision that has to be made. Surround her with people who will listen well, tell her the truth, and show up when she needs them. Prepare her heart for the day of birth, and for the new life of motherhood that follows. Hold them both close. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, be with this mother and her child today. Steady her breathing, quiet her worries, and keep the baby safe within her. Guide every hand that cares for them and give her peace that does not depend on news or numbers. Help her rest in the knowledge that you are near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

Pray this over the baby, thanking God that the child was formed with care and intention from the very beginning. It gives the mother a settled ground for her confidence in the body and the life she is carrying.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

Use this verse when fear rises in the middle of the night. Pray it slowly, letting God’s presence be the answer to the anxious thoughts that keep returning.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Bring each specific worry about the pregnancy, labor, or the future to God in prayer, naming them one by one. Then ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind.

(WEB)

Pray this with gratitude, thanking God for the gift of a child and asking him to shape the mother’s heart toward this little one with joy and wonder.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as early in the morning with a cup of tea or in the evening before sleep, so the prayer becomes a steady rhythm rather than something you remember only in a crisis. Sit somewhere quiet, and if you are the mother, you might rest one hand on your belly as you pray. A partner or friend might hold her hand, or place a hand gently on her shoulder while reading aloud.

Invite others to pray with you. A grandmother, a close friend, or a small group from church can take turns praying one paragraph each, so the mother hears many voices lifting her and the baby before God. You can also write the prayer on a card and keep it in her bag or by the bed for the moments when she needs words but cannot find her own.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this mother and keep her in his care. May he give her strength for each day and peace for each night. May the child she carries grow strong, healthy, and secure in the love of God, and may their whole family be held in his good and faithful hands.
