This night prayer is for anyone who goes to bed aware that their heart is more eager than their actions, and wants to hand the day’s resistance, reluctance and half-given effort to God before sleep. Pray it in the evening, once the lights are low and the day’s noise has quieted. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your heart is.
Night Prayer for a Willing Heart
Lord, you know the day I just lived. You saw the moments I said yes with my mouth and no with my shoulders, the tasks I put off, the kind word I meant to say and didn’t, the small resentments I carried from one conversation into the next. I don’t want to pretend I got it all right. I want to bring it to you honestly and ask you to take what I’m holding back.
Make my heart willing, Father. Not only in the big decisions but in the ordinary ones, the dishes, the phone call I’d rather skip, the patience I’m running short on at the end of a long week. Soften what has hardened. Quiet the voice that says my effort is never enough. Where I am tired, give me rest. Where I am afraid of tomorrow, remind me that you have already been there.
As I lie down now, I release the day into your hands. Guard my sleep and keep watch over the people I love, including the ones I failed to show up for today. Let my last thoughts be of your faithfulness rather than my shortcomings, and wake me tomorrow with a heart a little more ready to say, here I am. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I’m tired and my heart is not as willing as I wish it were. Forgive the reluctance I carried today and take it from me. Make me ready to serve tomorrow, even in small things. Settle my mind and let me sleep in your care. Keep me through the night, and let me wake to your mercy again. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer at the end of the day, ideally in the same spot each night, such as the edge of your bed or a chair beside a window. Keep a small notebook nearby and, before you begin, write down one moment from the day when your heart felt unwilling. Read the prayer aloud and let that moment become part of what you hand to God.
If you share a home, ask someone to pray it with you or over you, perhaps a spouse, a roommate or a friend on the phone. Hearing another person speak these words can make the willingness feel less like a private burden and more like something you are carrying together.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over you through the night grant you a quiet heart and a willing spirit. May you sleep without fear, and may you wake to find his mercy new again, ready to be received and shared with the people you meet.
