This is an evening prayer for my church, written for the close of the day, when the work is done and the building is quiet. Pray it before bed, at the kitchen table, in the car after a meeting, or whenever you find yourself thinking about the people you worship with. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the same concerns.

Evening Prayer for My Church

Lord, as this day ends, I bring my church before you. You know the names of every family that sat in the pews this morning and every person who stayed away. You know the ones who carried heavy news home with them, the ones who are sick in hospital beds, and the ones who quietly wonder whether they still belong. Be near to each of them tonight. Let them rest in the knowledge that they are seen and known by you.

Father, I thank you for the people who have served us this week: the ones who set up chairs, who answered the phone, who sat with a grieving neighbor, who taught the children, who prayed when no one else knew to. Keep them from burnout. Refill whatever they have poured out. Remind them that the work is yours and that you do not grow weary. Give our leaders wisdom for decisions still ahead, and protect them from pride and from fear.

Watch over our church while we sleep. Guard our building, our homes and our families against harm. Quiet the anxious thoughts that keep people awake, and let the young and the old alike sleep in peace. Bring our church closer to you and closer to one another, so that tomorrow we will love well and speak truth gently. Thank you for holding us all in your hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for the church you have gathered together. Hold each person in it tonight, especially the ones who are struggling. Give our leaders rest and wisdom, and protect our families through the night. Let us wake tomorrow ready to serve you and one another. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your church as a declaration of trust. Name the people you worry about and ask God to let them lie down in safety tonight, knowing he is the one who keeps them.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release the weight of church work into God’s hands. Thank him that the building, the programs and the ministries do not depend on your effort alone, and ask him to be the builder.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring the anxieties your church is carrying to God in prayer, one by one. Ask that the peace he gives would guard the hearts of members and leaders as they fall asleep.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over the relationships in your congregation. Ask God to help people encourage and build up one another, especially those who feel discouraged or forgotten tonight.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly as a prayer of protection. Ask the Lord to keep watch over your church family through the night, since he neither slumbers nor sleeps.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time at the end of the evening, after the lights are low and before you turn in. A chair by a window or the edge of your bed works well. Some people find it helpful to hold a church directory, a bulletin or a notebook of prayer requests while they pray, so the names and needs are in front of them rather than only in memory.

If you pray with a spouse, housemate or friend from church, take turns reading the lines aloud. You might also pause after each paragraph and pray a sentence or two of your own for someone specific. Ask the Lord to show you one person to remember by name each night, and let that person become a small, steady part of your evening rhythm.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps his church watch over you tonight and over everyone you love in your congregation. May he give you rest that is deep and unhurried, and may his peace settle over your home like a warm blanket. Wake in the morning knowing that you are held, and that the church belongs to him.
