This evening prayer is for a single parent who has reached the end of the day with more still undone than finished. It is meant for bedtime, after the dishes, the homework and the last text has been answered, when you are ready to hand the day to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.
Evening Prayer for a Single Parent
Lord, I come to you tonight tired in a way sleep does not always fix. I have carried every decision alone today, from what to make for dinner to how to answer the hard question my child asked at bedtime. Some of it went well, and some of it I would do differently if I could. Thank you for being with me through all of it, even in the moments I did not feel your nearness. Take the weight I have been holding and set it down in your hands, because I cannot carry it through the night.
Father, watch over my children while they sleep. Guard their hearts from fear about the future and from the sadness of a home that looks different than they once imagined. Be the steady presence in their lives that I cannot always be, and help them feel your love in ways I may never see. Where I have failed them today, forgive me, and where I have been patient and kind, let that be enough. Teach me to trust that you are working even in the parts of our story I do not understand.
Provide for us in the days ahead, Lord, the bills and the schedule and the things I keep adding to my list at night. Give me wisdom for the choices I face and the strength to keep going when I want to give up. Surround us with people who can help carry the load, and open doors I cannot see from where I stand. Now, as I lie down, let me rest without guilt, knowing you do not sleep and you do not forget us. Keep us safe until morning. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am worn out tonight. Take what I could not finish today and the worry I am carrying into tomorrow. Watch over my children while they sleep, and over me as well. Give me enough rest to face the morning, and let me feel your peace settle in this quiet house. Thank you for being with us. Amen.

Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

Lamentations 3:22-23
22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Pray this when tomorrow feels as heavy as today. Thank God that his mercies begin again each morning, and ask him to let that truth steady you before the alarm goes off.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed moment, such as after the last light goes off or while you sit on the edge of your child’s bed, so the prayer becomes part of your nightly rhythm. Keep something in your hands while you pray, like a folded blanket, a mug of tea or a small cross, so your body has something to do while your mind slows down. If the house is loud or you are too exhausted for full sentences, pray the shorter version and let the rest wait for morning.
You do not have to pray this alone. Ask a trusted friend, a family member or someone from your church to pray it with you once a week by phone or over a text, so you have another person standing with you in the work of raising your children. Some single parents find it helpful to pray the same prayer each night for a few weeks, letting the familiar words carry them when they have nothing new to say.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over this home tonight. May he give rest to the one who has worked hard all day, and peace to the children asleep down the hall. May the morning bring fresh mercy, and may the one who prays this prayer wake knowing they are not alone.
