This simple prayer for the day ahead is meant for the early part of your morning, before the phone lights up and the day’s demands take over. Pray it when you first sit up, while you make coffee, or on the drive to work. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your needs are different from the ones listed here.

Simple Prayer for the Day Ahead

Lord, thank you for this new day. I did not make it, and I did not earn the hours that are ahead of me, but you have given them to me anyway. Before I think about my list, my inbox, or the people who will need something from me, I want to hand you the day as a whole. Be in the first conversation I have, the first decision I make, and the first moment I feel tired or short-tempered.

You know the things that already sit heavy on me this morning. There is the work that will not finish on time, the bill I am still trying to make fit, and the conversation with someone I love that I have been putting off. Give me clear thinking when I need to focus, and patience when I am interrupted. Where I am worried, remind me that you are already in the next hour. Where I am tempted to rush ahead, slow me down enough to notice the people in front of me.

Keep my words kind and my hands useful. When I fail, let me say sorry quickly and move on rather than carry it all day. And at the end of the day, let me look back and see that you were with me in it all. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am starting this day with you. Go before me into every meeting, every errand and every hard moment. Give me enough patience for the people I love and enough wisdom for the choices in front of me. Help me to be useful, honest and kind, and keep me close to you when the pressure builds. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when you wake up unsure whether today can possibly go well. Thank God that his mercy is not used up overnight, and ask him to renew your strength before the first demand arrives.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you begin the day, letting each phrase become a sentence of thanks. Ask God to help you receive the day as a gift, even if it arrives with difficulties attached.

Psalm 143:8

Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to show you the path for the next few hours. Name one decision you need guidance on, and trust that he hears you when you lift it to him.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this for a mind that keeps wandering to tomorrow’s worries. Ask God to steady your thoughts on him, and notice each time you gently return your attention to his faithfulness.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Let this passage guide you through the anxious spots in your day. Bring each specific worry to God in prayer, and ask for the peace that Paul describes to guard your heart while you work.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still in a quiet place, before the first message or notification arrives. Sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of something warm works well, and so does standing at a window or walking a short loop around your home. Keep a pen nearby if you like, and jot down one or two things you want to bring back to God later in the day.

If you are praying for someone else, read the prayer aloud in the first person as you would for yourself, or change the pronouns to fit them and pray it over the person quietly before they leave the house. A spouse, a friend or a small group can also pray it together, each person taking a sentence in turn so the prayer becomes a shared start to the day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you through every hour of it. May he give you patience in the hard moments, clear thought for the tasks in front of you, and a calm heart when things do not go to plan. May you rest tonight knowing you were held all the way through.
