This night prayer is for a friend you want to bring before God as the day ends. Pray it in the evening or at bedtime, whether you are sitting at the kitchen table or lying down with the lamp off. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and worries you carry for your friend.

Night Prayer for a Friend

Lord, thank you for this day and for every small mercy in it. Thank you that you have been awake all along, watching over the ones I love while I was busy with my own things. I bring my friend to you now. You know the weight they carried today, the conversations that went badly, the news they are still turning over in their mind, and the quiet fears they have not said out loud to anyone. Be near them in it. Settle their thoughts the way you settle the evening sky.

Father, where my friend is tired, give them rest that goes deeper than sleep. Where they are anxious about tomorrow, remind them that tomorrow is already in your hands. Where they are lonely, let them feel your presence in the stillness of their room, and send someone who will check on them in the morning. Guard their sleep tonight. Keep bad dreams far away and let their body and mind let go of the day. Protect them through the dark hours, and wake them with hope.

I also lift up my own heart. Help me to be a faithful friend, one who prays and does not simply worry. Let my love for them be real and steady. Thank you that nothing in my friend’s life is hidden from you, and that you do not grow tired of hearing their name. Into your care I give them now, and I rest in that same care myself. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is in your hands tonight. You see the day they had and the night they are facing. Give them peace where they are restless, comfort where they hurt, and courage for whatever waits at sunrise. Surround them with your protection while they sleep, and let them wake knowing you have not left them. Thank you for hearing us. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over your friend as a declaration of trust. Ask God to let them lie down and sleep, because their safety does not depend on their own vigilance.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

This psalm pictures God as a watchman who never dozes off. Use it to ask that your friend would feel guarded through the whole night, not only at its start.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to the weary and burdened. Pray that your friend would hear this invitation personally and bring their exhaustion to him rather than carrying it alone.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes about turning worry into prayer and receiving a peace that guards the heart. Ask God to replace your friend’s racing thoughts with that kind of settled calm.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Written in grief, this passage still ends with the mercies of God being new every morning. Pray that your friend would wake to fresh evidence of God’s faithfulness, even if the night was hard.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the day is winding down, perhaps after the dishes are done or when you are settling into bed. Keep your phone in another room if you can, so your attention stays on God and on the person you are praying for. You might hold a cup of tea or rest your hand on a pillow as a small physical reminder to release the day into God’s hands.

If you know others who care about your friend, consider praying this prayer together by phone or in a shared message thread, or simply let them know you are lifting them up tonight. Some people find it helpful to pray the prayer again the next evening, adding anything that has changed. Over time, your friend may come to feel the steady presence of people who keep showing up for them in prayer.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your friend through the night and bring them to morning with a rested heart. May his peace settle over every worry, and may they know they are loved and remembered. Go to sleep now, knowing that the one who never slumbers is awake for both of you.
