This prayer is for asking God’s mercy, wisdom and protection over the nation where you live. You can pray it when the news feels heavy, before an election or public decision, on a national day of remembrance, or simply as part of your regular prayer time. It can be read aloud exactly as written, or you can use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for My Country

Lord, you are the one who rules over all nations, and you have not stopped being faithful to the people of this land. I come to you on its behalf today. I ask you to look with compassion on the leaders who carry weighty decisions. Give them wisdom that goes deeper than politics, honesty when it costs them, and humility to listen to people who disagree with them. Keep them from pride and from fear, and help them remember that they answer to you.

I pray for the families who are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries or keep a job. I pray for the children in our schools, the nurses and teachers working long shifts, the veterans and the elderly who feel forgotten, and the immigrants who are far from home. Heal the divisions that have hardened between neighbors, and let the people of this country treat one another with the dignity that belongs to every person made in your image. Protect the vulnerable from injustice, and let those with influence use it for the common good. Let peace take root in our streets, our homes and our hearts, and let the church here be a light that points people to you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, bless this country and the people in it. Give wisdom to those who lead, mercy to those who suffer, and courage to those who serve. Guard our homes and our communities from violence and despair, and turn the hearts of your people back toward you. Where we have failed, forgive us, and where we are weary, renew us. Let your peace settle over this land today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul asks that prayers be offered for all people, and specifically for kings and those in authority. Pray these words by naming your leaders one by one, asking God to give them peace in their work so that ordinary people can live quiet and godly lives.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

God told his exiled people to seek the welfare of the city where they lived and to pray for it. Let this verse shape you into someone who wants your neighborhood and your nation to flourish, not only your own household.

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

(WEB)

This psalm celebrates a nation whose God is the Lord. Use it as a prayer of thanks for the blessings you have received, and ask that the people of your country would keep choosing to trust him.

Psalm 122:6-7

6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Those who love you will prosper. 7 Peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces.

(WEB)

The psalmist calls for prayer for the peace of Jerusalem and for safety within its walls. Pray these lines for your own country, asking for peace inside its borders and calm within its homes.

Proverbs 14:34

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

(WEB)

Proverbs teaches that righteousness lifts a nation while sin brings disgrace. Pray this verse by asking God to draw the people of your country toward justice, integrity and kindness in daily life.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their country in the early morning, before the day’s news begins to crowd in. Sit with a cup of coffee, keep a Bible or notebook nearby, and read the main prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to name a person or situation that comes to mind. If you have a map, a newspaper or a list of local officials, place it in front of you as a visual reminder.

You can also invite others to join you. A family might pray the shorter version together at the dinner table, a small group could take turns reading one paragraph each, and a church can set aside time on a weekly basis to lift up its leaders and neighbors. Praying together makes it harder to slip into cynicism and easier to hold the nation’s needs with hope.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who reigns over every nation keep this country under his care. May he give its people wisdom, peace and hope, and may he make each of them a source of goodness to those around them. The Lord bless and keep the people of this land.
