This prayer is for the day set aside to honor mothers, whether you are celebrating your own mother, thanking the woman who raised you, or grieving a mother who is no longer here. Pray it in the morning, at the table, or in the quiet before a family gathers. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart leads.

Blessings for Mother’s Day

Lord, thank You for the women who gave us life, who held us when we were small, and who kept watch over us when we did not know we were being watched over. Today we remember mothers with gratitude. Some of them carried us with joy, and some carried us through hard years we would rather forget. Meet each of them where they are. Meet the mother who is tired in ways no one sees, the mother waiting on a child who has wandered far, and the mother who is learning, late in life, how to be loved by her grown children.

Bless the mothers who long to be mothers and have not yet been given that gift, and bless the ones who have lost a child and still set a place for them in their hearts. Comfort the women who were not mothered well, and give them people who love them the way You intended. Give the mothers in our lives patience for the hours they feel stretched thin, and remind them that their small, ordinary faithfulness matters to You. Let them know, today especially, that they are seen and that they are loved.

Father, we ask You to pour out Your favor on every mother we name in our hearts. Keep them healthy, keep them safe, and keep them close to You. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless the mothers I know today. Give strength to the tired ones, comfort to the grieving ones, and joy to the ones who are celebrating. Help me to honor them with words and with actions, and to be grateful for the love they have poured into my life. Thank You for giving us mothers. Amen.

Isaiah 66:13

As one whom his mother comforts, so will I comfort you. You will be comforted in Jerusalem.”

(WEB)

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Psalm 68:5

A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer early in the day, before the phone starts buzzing with messages and the schedule fills up. Sit somewhere quiet, perhaps with a cup of coffee or tea, and read the prayer slowly. If you are preparing a meal or setting the table for a family celebration, you can pray it with your hands busy, pausing at each name you bring to mind.

If you cannot pray in person with your mother, consider reading this prayer aloud over a phone call or a card you send. Others in your household, a spouse, a sibling, or a grown child, could pray it together with you, taking turns with the lines about different mothers. Let the prayer be a bridge that carries your gratitude and your concern to God and to the people you love.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless the mothers in your life and keep them under His care. May they feel His peace when the day is long, His joy when the house is loud, and His nearness when the house is quiet. May you, in turn, be given grace to honor them well.
