This daily prayer for forgiveness is for the person who knows they have done wrong, or who is still carrying guilt from something they cannot undo. It works well in the morning before the day gets loud, or at night when the day’s failures come back to mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and say the words that are on your heart in your own voice.

Daily Prayer for Forgiveness

Father, I come to you again today, and I am not coming with a clean record. Yesterday I said things I should not have said, and I thought thoughts I would be ashamed for anyone to hear. Some of the wrongs I have done were small enough that I almost forgot them, and others I cannot stop replaying. Show me what I have done, and help me to see it honestly without drowning in it.

Thank you that you are not waiting for me to become worthy before you forgive me. You forgave me because of Jesus, not because of anything I managed to do well. Let that truth settle into the places where I still feel I have to pay you back. I receive your mercy today, and I ask you to help me extend that same mercy to the people who have hurt me, including myself when I fall short again.

Give me a clear conscience and a soft heart. Where I need to make things right with someone, give me the courage to do it, and the wisdom to know what to say. Where I need only to rest in your forgiveness, help me stop reaching for punishment I have already been spared. Guard my heart from pride and from despair, and keep me walking closely with you through this day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I have failed you again, and I am sorry. Cleanse me, forgive me, and set my feet back on the path with you. Help me to receive your forgiveness and to forgive as I have been forgiven. Thank you that your mercy is new every morning, and that you meet me here, right now. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 51:1-2

1 Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. Cleanse me from my sin.

(WEB)

David wrote this after he had sinned gravely and been confronted for it. Pray these words slowly, asking God to act on the basis of his steadfast love and not on the basis of what you deserve. Let the request for cleansing become your own.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

This verse ties confession to faithfulness and justice, which means God’s forgiveness is not a guess. When you pray it, name specific wrongs rather than speaking in general terms, and then thank God for the cleansing he promises.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

When guilt keeps returning, read this verse aloud and picture the distance it describes. Ask God to help you stop carrying what he has already removed, and to let this be true for your memory as well as your record.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

This passage was written in the ruins of Jerusalem, yet it speaks of mercies that begin again each morning. Use it as a morning prayer, asking God to meet you with fresh compassion before you have done anything to earn it.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Forgiveness received is meant to flow outward. Pray this verse for the people you find hard to forgive, asking God to make your forgiveness of them as real as the forgiveness you have been given.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose one consistent time, such as just after you wake or before you sleep, so the prayer becomes a habit rather than a rescue. Sit somewhere quiet, and if it helps, hold a cup of tea or open your hands in your lap to remind yourself that you are receiving something rather than earning it. Pause after each paragraph and let God speak before you move on.

If you are praying with someone, such as a spouse, a friend, or a small group, you can take turns reading the paragraphs aloud. Hearing another person confess and receive forgiveness can make it easier to believe it is true for you as well. Finish by asking that person to speak the blessing below over you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgives every sin also heal every wound that sin has left behind. May he lift the weight you have carried, quiet the voice of accusation, and give you peace that is steady enough for this day. May you walk out in the freedom he has already secured for you.
