This short prayer for those in need is written for the moments when someone you love, or someone you have only heard about, is struggling with illness, grief, money worries, fear, or a hard season that has no clear end. You can pray it in the morning before the day gets loud, at a bedside, in the car on the way to an appointment, or whenever a name comes to mind and you do not know what else to say. Read it aloud as it is written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and details you carry in your heart.

Short Prayer for Those in Need

Father, you see the people who are hurting today, including the ones who have not told anyone how tired they are. You know the sleepless nights, the phone calls they dread, the bills stacked on the counter, and the diagnosis they are still trying to believe. I bring them to you now, one by one, and I ask you to meet each of them exactly where they are. Be near to the ones who feel alone in a crowded room, and steady the ones whose hands are shaking.

Give them strength for the next hour, even if they cannot see past it. Provide food on the table, rest for their bodies, and wisdom for the decisions that are pressing on them. Where there is sickness, bring healing if it is your will, and comfort and courage either way. Where there is grief, sit with them in it so they never grieve without your presence. Where there is fear, quiet it with the reminder that you have not left them.

Raise up good people around them, neighbors and friends and strangers who show up with a meal, a ride, or an open ear. And let them come to know, in a real and personal way, that you are near and that you care for them. Hear this prayer for those in need, and answer in the ways only you can. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, there are people hurting right now, and I cannot fix what is breaking for them. Be near them in this moment. Give them the strength they need for the next hour and the peace that only you can give. Stay close to the ones who feel forgotten, and send help to the places where it is needed most. Thank you that you hear every prayer, including the ones with no words. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse over anyone whose heart is broken. Ask God to draw near to them in the specific ways that loss or disappointment has left them aching, and thank him that nearness to them is something he already delights to give.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Use this verse for those who are carrying more than they can manage. Ask Jesus to make the invitation real to them, so that they feel permission to set down the weight they have been holding alone for too long.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

This is a verse for fear. Pray it slowly for someone who is anxious about tomorrow, asking God to remind them of his presence and his strength when their own feel very small.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for someone who cannot stop worrying. Ask God to turn their anxious thoughts into prayers, and to guard their hearts with a peace that makes no sense from the outside but is deeply real on the inside.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Use this verse when trouble seems to have no edges. Ask God to be a refuge to the person in need, a place to run when everything else feels unsteady, and a help that is present right now.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time to pray for those in need, such as first thing in the morning with a cup of coffee, or in the evening before you turn out the light. Keep a short list of names on a notecard or in your phone so you are not relying on memory when a friend or family member is going through something hard. Praying with your hands open on your lap, or with a hand resting on the person’s photo or a bedside rail, can help the words feel more personal and less like something you are reading off a page.

You might also invite someone else to pray this prayer with you, a spouse, a small group, or a friend who is walking through the same trouble. Ask the person in need, if they are open to it, what they would like you to pray for specifically, and then let their answer shape the words you use. Prayer for others often grows deeper when it is shared, and it reminds everyone involved that they are not carrying the burden alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give peace to those who are struggling today and hold them in the palm of his hand. May he give strength where it has run thin, comfort where grief has settled in, and hope that outlasts the hardest night. And may you, who have prayed for them, know that your prayers are heard and treasured by the God who sees every tear.
